...Linux most likely would be 1960s' Afghanistan: both rugged and
majestically beautiful from a distance, affordable even for a penniless
hippie, but if you actually use it, it's mostly a pain in the back.
However, those people who stay long enough to discover its hidden true
qualities immortally fall in love with it. Unfortunately, most users
lack such endurance...
You actually may avoid some of the hardships coming with travelling
there if you always stay in or close to the capital (debian.org), but
only if you compile your way through wintery Hazarajat by donkey caravan
you get the real experience!
