That's good news. All we have up here in Seattle is smoke from the fires
in Canada (well, it's cloudy today - maybe we'll finally get some rain -
it's been really dry this year).

some wind (straight line winds) damage in lexington (gusts up to 60 mph
at the airport) ... tree's and power lines down. sun coming out on back
side of the front will cause pop up tonight.

of course most of this is mother nature but some of this is man made ...
the interstate corridors (i64 & i75) steer the fronts as it move
eastward into mountains of west virginia

Yeah. My new boss is in Denver, but went to school here in Seattle - and
said that this spring/summer has felt like she was back here.

It's almost like we've become an extension of California from a water
level standpoint, and people here aren't really aware of water usage
(because, well, 135 days of rain per year on average).

My wife and I, having lived in Utah for 20/30 years (the former for me,
the latter for her) are well-versed in water restrictions. The locals
here - not so much.

Yeah, we'll actually have been here 18 months the end of August.

Indeed it does - we're looking at maybe moving again in February - the
rent is pretty steep here, and it's *extremely* crowded. We're looking
at perhaps a place on Bainbridge Island, on the west side of Seattle
(other side of Puget Sound).

I did - going to listen to it tonight.

how far is that from bremerton shipyard ... my old ship the Kitty Hawk
(cv-63) is there. she was decommissioned in 2009 right now still in
ready reserve but there is a effort underway to save her from scrap heap
and becoming a museum in long beach close to the queen mary. the Ranger
(CV-61) lost that battle and just arrived (got towed) to brownsville
texas and will be dismantled as scrap. would be a shame if the hawk
ended up that way ... she was the first ship of the kitty hawk class and
the last one of that class in service. at one point she was the flag
ship if the navy and flew the red and white stripped "don't tread on me"
ensign

I hope that the USS Kitty Hawk is not scrapped. I have heard that name
countless times, over the years.
It is sad when part of your life gets consigned to the scrap heap. The
Oil Platform I worked on, for 12 years, was decommissioned last year. :-(

As the crow flies, it's not far - but it's the other side of Port
Orchard, so driving distance is about 30 miles. (There's no direct ferry,
so taking the ferry takes longer - back to Seattle and then the Bremerton
ferry, which docks there; it probably would take less time in light
traffic from here in Bellevue than it would to take the ferry from BI to
Bremerton).

With me it is oil. I have a sample of first oil and one from the

BWAH!!!! Alaska is about 2,000 miles away from us.

In the Seattle area, the current population is around 3.61 million
people, and it's the fastest growing metro area in the US.

I'll grant you that that's less than half the population of London,
though - practically rural by comparison. ;)

Which is a hugely positive thing. The ferry ride takes about 30 minutes
from the island. :)

I shall have to do that - we're headed out to BI in 2 or 3 weeks, not
sure yet if we'll take the car on the ferry or just park in Seattle and
walk on the BI side.

have a short black*. Then enjoy the ride. :-)

LOL, it is a shame you weren't able to come up to visit when you were out
here. Yeah, distance in the US is like time in the EU/UK.

I've got a friend planning to drive from Minneapolis to Seattle in
September - his first real vacation in years. That drive is
(comparatively) short, a mere 1,600 miles. :) He's figuring two days
each direction.

So the 3.61 million is the metro area, including Bellevue, Tacoma, and
Seattle (and the surrounding communities).

Seattle proper is about 650,000.

Yeah, we've done the ferry once (with the car), and I really enjoyed it.
But when it's busy, I can see it being a pain, too - having to wait 2-3
hours for one that's not full seems like it would be no fun.

But that typically would only happen when taking the car - walk-on isn't
generally that much of a problem, and there is light rail in Seattle, and
a fairly decent public transit system.

I always think of Eddie Izzard with the "Through" (he pronounces it
'thruff') vs. "Thru" thing.

Then again, you have extraneous vowels in some of your words. Colour,
neighbour, sistour....

It's part of one of his routines - I quite enjoy his humour (<-- just for
you ;) ); it's a shame the tickets to his shows are so bloody expensive.
He was here in Seattle end of last month, but the tickets were going for
about $500 a piece (though I see from the website that the prices were
more like $40/$60 - so that may have been 'aftermarket' tickets because
it was sold out).

I wanted three, and with the way work went today, I couldn't think of a
third. ;)

I took the coast road. :-)
Miles were shorter in those days.
I keep getting lost.
I meant 600 miles.

Select the correct answer from the above.

Very likely.

Very much so - I enjoy those kinds of long drives as well - though
recently, most of my longer trips on the surface have been by train (I'm
flying to Denver next week - and again next month - because the train is
too long a trip and too expensive).

That is very true.

I'm glad you spelled "though" correctly, too - well done. ;)

Heh, no, winters here don't tend to get snow - and when there is snow,
the city shuts down; the amount of rain we allegedly get here means the
roads are designed for drainage rather than being good for snow/ice.
Especially with how hilly it is. Seattle's not very different from, say,
Houston, when it snows here. But it's a pretty rare thing.

We probably would - but where we currently live is more affluent, and a
recent vote denied expansion of bus routes in the area. :/

I've recently been accused (incorrectly, I might add) of being an "easily
offended liberal" in another community. It's like people don't know
me. ;)

That's OK - different tastes are fine. I think the recorded shows are
*probably* better than live performances - he's dyslexic, and apparently
sometimes has trouble remembering where he was going. That would be
quite distracting, I think.

But his run around the UK ("Marathon Man" is the series about it) was
very good - not really about his comedy at all.

Thank you but the truth is that I have 800 miles stuck in my head and I
can't get rid of it.
