Gives you another three decimal places if you count the leters.

free time I've invested in this pointless task.

Frankly, if you're measuring something that's 10 meters across, do you 
even *care* about the last 5mm? Probably not.

I am impressed. Could you remember 355/113 as an approximation for Pi?
If you drew a circle a couple of miles in diameter. The circumference 
would be less than a millimetre out.

Not if you are measuring it in cubits Otherwise that is a terrible 
tolerance. For instance the first breakthrough from the English to 
French side of the Channel Tunnel was 358 mm out over 22 Km.
