Anyone know any good free Minecraft Servers?

I've found a few websites with server lists, but all the ones we tried to 
connect to either require loads of mods or require membership to play (or 
both!)

My son (aged 9) loves Minecraft and would like to join a "safe" free vanilla 
server. At the moment we can run version 1.6.4 or version 1.7.2 on Windows 7 
(other versions seems to crash - I'm guessing it's a graphic card problem?)

My son is running his off an old laptop on 1.8 without problems. He says  
unfortunately you won't get a server with those old versions.

I think you can get a basic graphics card for quite cheap.
