What's on your desktop? Not the virtual one but the real one.
Right now I have two monitors, a keyboard, a mouse and a KVM switch.
There are also an empty coffee cup (with the word TEA written on it),
two landline telephones and a mobile, a pile of unanswered mail, a toy
penguin called Tux, a half-empty bottle of Lucozade Sport and, for no
apparent reason, a 2 metre length of Cat5 cable.

Lots of stuff.

Probably too much to enumerate, actually - and I need to clear some of it
off, because I am getting some new gear next week - including a new 27"
monitor for work. I'm not sure exactly where I'm going to put it,
because I hate to block the view I have to the north out my window.

Oh, and not forgetting the USB key which allows Cubase to run. If you

The correct quote would be "are we talking about the little white furry
things with the cheese fixation and women standing on tables screaming

Green laser pointer, and a solar powered charger. :)

Oh, and a stack of "Get Out of Hell Free" cards.

The horizontal part is 240cm by 800cm.

Needless to say, you don't buy something like that in a shop. My mother
constructed the thing. It's actually several lengths of cheap laminated
counter-top, bolted together with a random assortment of screws,
dowel-pins and angle brackets. It also has a small set of shelves on
top. My mother lives for solving problems like this with needlessly
complicated solutions...

Apart from the obvious items, I've got a SpaceMouse 3D mouse, a bottle
of coke with the label "Share a Coke Zero with Gin", some random parts
from some of the products we are making/designing. The most interesting
thing (and probably the highest price per unit volume) is a tiny disc of
sapphire with a 40 micron hole down the middle.

From left to right (as if it mattered!):
3-in-1 Printer
Computer Tower
Speaker
20" screen (old 4x3 aspect ratio)
15" screen (also old)
Speaker
Cordless phone base with phone in it.
In-basket filled with:
- IBM logo cup with pens, pencils and X-Acto knife.
- Paperclip dispenser with paper-clips.
- dozen post-it pads of various sizes
- 12" ruler
- Bluetooth ear piece charger
Box of Kleenex
Bottle of screen cleaning spray
Notepad
CD filled with pictures from my daughter's daycare
two unpaid bills

Up to 10 days ago, there would have been a cat snoring on the desk as
well, but he's now in the Big-Comfy-Couch-In-The-Sky.

I can confirm the Cat5 cable ;-)

Other than that:
Two monitors - check. Both 24", for maximum screen real estate.
A keyboard - check.
A mouse - check.
A KVM switch - nope. But I do have access to the other machine via Xming.

An empty coffee cup and half-empty bottle of Lucozade - nope. A
non-empty glass of water sits within arm's reach in a bookshelf to my
right though; the desktop proved to be a too dangerous place for liquid
containers.

Two landline telephones and a mobile - nope, just one landline. And not
actually landline, but ISDN via VoIP.

A pile of unanswered mail - check. Plus plenty of other pieces of paper
including invoices, newspaper clippings and a pizza service brochure,
CDs, and some odds & ends.

A toy penguin - nope, no mascots here. A plastic rose though.

That, plus:
A printer stand with plenty of blank printer paper; a laser
printer/scanner/photocopier/fax machine; two large jugs and a miniature
dustbin all crammed with pens, pencils, markers, eraser pens, and a pair
of scissors; a collection of plastic customer cards, business cards and
similar; a silver TC-RTC trophy keychain; a wristwatch that hasn't been
rewound for ages; a beyerdynamics headset I got for my 40th birthday; a
small toothpick container (with a few picks left); a colorimeter; an LED
flashlight; a set of nasty-sounding speakers I barely use anymore; a
mousepad; and two game keypads I've not used for ages.

Ah, and of course a Raspberry Pi. Which is the reason why /I/ have a 2
metre length of Cat5 cable on my desktop (a patch cable actually) ;-).

You're sure you don't mean 240cm by 80cm?

Then again, no, that would probably be too small for all the stuff.

Gee, I don't even have a room large enough for such a beast!

I only have two rooms. But one of them contains a double bed, a
wardrobe, a chest of drawers, a bookcase, that palatial desk and still
has sufficient floorspace for my to practice my mambo steps.

I think when I tell people that I live in a "one-bedroom flat", they
imaging something like a broom cupboard. I only have two rooms, but
they're really quite... large.

And for my desk at home... 3 monitors, a steering wheel and a gear
stick... a couple of bills, a printer, amp and speakers, a rack full of
various electronic bits, a mini-screwdriver set, a tape measure, an
arduino and stepper motor driver board (with a heat sink bigger than
board itself), a YLOD'd PS3 that I keep meaning to sell on ebay, a Sony
action cam, a manual on how a dual-action polisher works, and my gf gets
30cm at the end for an in-tray-like contraption that she hardly ever
touches :-)

Well she has her own desk in another room... she's lucky I haven't

Well, /if/ Schrodinger's kitty ever turns out to be /definitely/ dead,
then it /will/ be curiosity that killed it. Without a cruel curious
observer to open the box to look, kitty could exist happily ever after
in a state of comfy uncertainty.

(Note that Schrodinger's though experiment is terribly bogus; as he
noted himself, the idea of a feline being alive /and/ dead at the same
time is ridiculous enough, but the mere thought of any box providing no
conceivable escape route for a cat really tops it off. Now a canine,
that would be an entirely different story...)

With our three cats, that doesn't seem infeasible. They seem to prefer
spending all their time in the various boxes we've left around the house
for them.

From this whole exercise I must conclude that the "Clean Desk" movement
has gotten nowhere at all :-) At my office somewhen during the nineties
that was the policy; it didn't work of course.

So, what do I surround me with? Papers (lots of) from snippets (1x5 cm)
to A4 format; books (also paper, but different, as those from an older
generation know); a tea mug (full); a piece of toasted bread; a torture
instrument to pierce holes in paper sheets; two rulers for different
scales (e.g. 1:250 1:500 1:1250); two pens; a PC + screen; soundboxes.

Not properly on the desktop but within reach on a shelf, are more papers
and books; a box with an assorted collection of desktop junk like
scissors and staples etc; a pack of playing cards and a pack of Tarot
cards; a couple of notebooks (paper); a thermometer; two external drives.

I may have forgotten some items.... :-)

I don't know about that. From what I've read here everyone seems quite
regulated. Mine is so cluttered it is like an archilogical dig finding things. I
have even misplaced a dwarf wolly mamoth, somewhere.

Well, regulated compared with /your/ desk? ;-)

Yes, that's what I mean. I can easily recognise that :-)

Feline rules of acquisition:
1. Can I eat it?
2. Can I sleep on it?
2.a. Were you trying to read that?
2.b. Will cat hair mess it up?
3. Can I sleep in it?

If you've answered yes to any of the questions above, the item now
belongs to the cat and any attempt to reclaim it will prove to be futile.

I had a prof in university who would routinely "lose" the phone on his
desk and would have no choice but start from the wall jack and follow
the wire, as the stack of papers and circuit boards would muffle the
ring sound.

He'll be screwed when they replace the old phones with wireless ones..

That explains what happens when a cat lies down on your lap,
certainly...We call it "cat stapling," but I've also heard it called
"feline paralysis."

My story is:
Quite a few years ago, my wife took time off work because she was ill.
When I came home that night she was lying on the sofa. Because our cat
had gone into the bedroom and head butted* her until she got out of bed.
Then he went to sleep in "his" bed.

* Yes, the cat was from Glasgow and in the UK a head butt is called a
Glasgow Kiss. So maybe Bertie was being affectionate?

And there is no cure.

One of our cats found it quite normal at night to sleep on my chest,
front paws on both sides of my neck, snoring in my ears, saliva dripping
in my neck. The worst however, was when he was dreaming...

The Clean Desk Policy was very strict. Except for a screen, a keyboard,
a mouse and a phone, nothing was allowed after working hours. It meant
you had to re-create your own junk every morning and clean it up before
leaving. The bright idea (for which managers are sometimes known) behind
the concept was that a "cluttered desk revealed a cluttered mind" etc
etc. I suspect that the ideal was a permanently pristine desk during
working hours.

Ah, but you know all that I am sure.

At my work, the "clean desk policy" was to prevent confidential
information from falling into the wrong hands, which makes sense at
first, but quickly veered into GATTACA levels of paranoia, since going
through someone's rolodeck might reveal which customers and which
suppliers she's working with and may give a competitor information about
deals she's pursuing (assuming, of course, that the janitor is really a
competitor in disguise), so they enforced rules such as "no telephone
numbers must be visible" - which meant that depending on how anal
retentive the person doing the evening workplace audit was, you could
get written up for having the city phonebook on your bookshelf, or a
business card from your dentist.
