It definitely is a list of tupels, the question is if the contents are as
expected by whatever program.

thanks for the sanity check ... turns out the program that reads the 
list pads in the slashes. my list had too many of them

No.

Chakotay was Janeway's second in command.  Tupok was the science officer.
