You all know that there's a special level of hell reserved for people
playing this game in public?

It's quite Bosch-esque.

The game, that is. The special level in hell is far worse.

Why this is hell, nor are we out of it.
Think'st thou that we, who saw the face of ISIHAC,
And tasted the eternal joys of Hamish and Dougal,
Are not tormented with ten thousand hells
In being deprived of everlasting Mornington Crescent?"

AHHHH, OK, now I'm with you.

The obvious next move is Euston Road, so I think I'll pass on that and go
to Goodge Street.

And in some situations it probably isn't worth the effort
(=resource/time/money) to support anything in addition to the standard
MS office formats. For example you might need to purchase something to
edit PDF files, then train you staff how to use it, for what, another 5%
of customers who can't write .doc files? If you're operating a print
place then it is probably worth it, but not if you're (eg) a recruitment
agency.

Pivo is also the word for beer in Czech and Russian. Problably in most
other slavic languages, as well.

So you pay for licenses and train your staff to use MS Office so that
you don't have to train them to use something else?

Completely makes sense.

It makes complete sense if the majority of your customers are sending
you MS Office files, and only a minority want to send you pdf. You'd be
crazy in that situation to only deal with pdf files.

I beg to differ. Firstly, what makes you think that the minority will
switch to the system you have dictated? The most likely scenario is that
they will leave you and find somebody more flexible.
Then, what? Are you going to tell them that they must submit images only
in .png? You'll lose a few more.
Keep on going like that and you'll soon have no customers left.

Especially since "we don't accept PDF's because our staff doesn't know
how to handle them" is a stupid reason and makes the company look bad.
They are supposed to be professionals. They should start acting like ones.

I don't think that, I don't think you understood what I meant. If you
accept *only* .doc files, you're going to lose customers who can't/won't
create them. If you accept *only* PDF files, you're going to lose
customers who can't/won't create them. My point is, if you have to
choose one, accepting the .doc files is likely to get you way more
customers. And my second point is that accepting both may not be
financially viable (ie the cost of licenses/training against the
increase in customers compared to only accepting one format).

I think a point is missed here. M$ Office is the de facto standard. Anyone who
goes away from that is bucking the trend. There is no need to train people on M$
Office, that gets done in house with “How do you do this?” questions to your
co-workers. PDF’s are also becoming a standard way of sending documents that you
don’t want changed.
This is just data that I have picked up over the years. On average I work at two
large (multinational) companies a year. The sort of companies that tell their
vendors which standard of documents are acceptable to them.

Fun? FUN? This is serious.

Opens a second layer: Vittorio Emanuele

From Vittorio Emanuele re d'italia one naturally thinks of the master who wrote
Giovanna d'Arco. Who when on his deathbed, the residents of Milan covered the
streets outside his house with straw. Which links to Jack Straw's Castle. So
Hampstead Heath

Congratulations to John, who is a very experienced player of this game as he has
played it many times before. He has played it not only in Britain but in many
places around the world.
John get the points and points mean the sharp end of a needle.
What do points mean?

And my congratulations to Stephen whose understanding of Jean-Paul
Sartre's Theory of Existentialism is exceeded only by his handling of a
large Glenmorangie.

If only we hadn't been playing the original rules variant, that probably
wouldn't have worked. :)

Voice from the off:

"Did not. But the referees are still busy discussing whether 'The Heath'
was meant to denote the area in Uttoxeter, the place in the civil parish
of Leintwardine, or a golf club near Portlaoise. The latter may actually
have constituted a legal move even after John's cunning move to the
Street of Cunning Artificers. Stephen, what is your handicap?"
