I don't know why I'm writing this here but I've just witnessed a
suicide. A lady threw herself under a train at Pimlico station.
I'm a little bit shaken, she's dead and the driver will be traumatised
for the rest of his career.
Pray for her and the driver. I can cope

FWIW Jim, I'm sitting in my study and listening to baroque chamber
music. At least my hands have stopped shaking.
Tomorrow, some flowers on the place she was last alive.

That's good. It's OK if you /can't/ cope, too - you probably are/were
still in shock.

That seems a good idea. If you have trouble, please talk to someone.

That is terribly sad. I witnessed the same about 30 years ago. I noticed
her before because of her agitated behaviour, but what do you know?
Then, when she jumped, in front of my eyes at less than 10 m, for a
short second, I thought: "Oh, she needs to cross to the other platform".
The mind refuses to accept the evidence.
You know John, it remains an image branded on your retina for the rest
of your life. I wonder how drivers cope with this. Apparently they are
confronted quite often to such experiences, at least in some areas I am
told.

If she had done that... well, you know where I'm going with this.

The strange thing is that now, 15 hours later, I can't accurately
remember the actual jump. A step forward, yes, but then its all blank
until the train stopped halfway down the platform. I probably thought
she was trying to be first on the train so she would have a better
chance of getting a seat.
There were probably another 20 people on the platform and no-one said a
word.

As I said, pray for the driver.

My next-door neighbour is a retired psychologist. I shall probably have
a chat with her within the next day or so.

In the words of Pink Floyd on The Division Bell:
"There's a silence surrounding me I can't seem to think straight
I'll sit in the corner
No one can bother me
I think I should speak now (Why won't you talk to me)
I can't seem to speak now (You never talk to me)
My words won't come out right (What are you thinking)
I feel like I'm drowning (What are you feeling)
I'm feeling weak now (Why won't you talk to me) But I can't show my
weakness (You never talk to me)
I sometimes wonder (What are you thinking)
Where do we go from here (What are you feeling)
It doesn't have to be like this
All we need to do is make sure we keep talking (Why won't you talk to me)
I feel like I'm drowning (You never talk to me)
You know I can't breathe now (What are you thinking)
We're going nowhere (What are you feeling)
We're going nowhere (Why won't you talk to me)
(You never talk to me) (What are you thinking) (Where do we go from here)
It doesn't have to be like this
All we need to do is make sure we keep talking"
... I don't mean send a text. Face to face is the only way.

Bummer!
About thirty years ago, someone ran out in front of me on an empty dual
carriageway. I swerved and just clipped him but as I was doing about 50 mph when
I saw him, it was more than a scratch. I kept reliving it every night for about
a week. Even now I occasionally get flashbacks.
As I said, bummer all round. :-(

Indeed, mate, indeed.
Now I'm going to put a smile on my face by picking up the Feegle from
the nursery school and teaching him how to ride his new bike.

Thanks to all those who replied with sympathetic messages and advice.
I am calling a halt to this thread mainly because I think its better
that I push the subject to the back of my mind
BTW The Feegle enjoyed his bike lesson, especially the part where I
stepped into a deep muddy puddle.

I can't say anything about this without sounding like a completely
insensitive jerk, which is quite frustrating.

Yep. Of course, she may well have been talking to someone, too.
