For this we have to go to the early years of the POV-Ray newsgroup.
A long, long time ago someone made a post in the binaries.images group
with the subject "AWSOME ROLEX!" (yes, with that typo) and which contained
a photorealistic rendering of a wristwatch.
There might have been some discussion over whether it was really made with
POV-Ray or if it was just a photo, but I don't remember if that were the
case. Either way, "awsome rolex" became some kind of inside joke, either
referring to a hyperrealistic rendering, or a photo trying to pass as one.
(Which one? There's debate over that. Maybe it depends on the context.
Maybe it doesn't really matter in the context of the pun.)
(And what exactly is the "pun" in this inside joke? Well, that's not
always clear either. Maybe there is no pun. Maybe it's just that "awsome
rolex" sounds so catchy that it doesn't need a pun. A bit like "Kilroy
was here" and other such phrases.)
