My first thought is you added stuff to the drive while it was ghosting, or
deleted stuff, or some such.

I deleted some stuff from the Ghost image, yes. But I also "compiled"
the result, which is supposed to flatten out the changes. (In other
words, you don't keep images of the blocks that are now unused, so the
file gets smaller.)
