OK, so despite having several videos on YouTube, it seems they have
decided that I no longer exist. YouTube claims that for some reason only
people with a Google account can sign in. Wuh?

I'm surprised they let you last this long. They made me switch to a

So... I have to sign up for a new account to continue using YouTube?

No. You link your gmail account to your "legacy" Youtube account.
