FoldIt is a pretty enjoyable game, and you can download it here: 
http://fold.it/  It works pretty well as a substitute to games like 
solitaire/minesweeper/etc.

Interestingly, I'm actually friends with several of the people behind 
this project -- they've done a really good job on it.

Also, I'm not completely sure it's fair to say scientists "failed"; it 
was their idea to harness gamers, right? ;-)
