And if a man speaks in a forest, he is still wrong, even if no woman is
there to hear him.

In the original Dracula novel the eponymous character was not even
annoyed by sunlight. (But IIRC he was unable to transform.)

IIRC also in the original Dracula movie sunlight wasn't such a big
problem.

The whole sunlight thing was invented by the movie Nosferatu. For some
reason it stuck.

Comparing those two movies is actually interesting, as they both set
precedents that have lasted to this day. The former set the precedent for
an elegant suave aristocrat gentleman who would lure their victims using
his sheer charm and personality (with possible bits of hypnosis).

The latter set the precedent for the deformed, big-fanged, pointy-eared
(and hence more bat-like) vampire, which also sees its uses nowadays to
larger or lesser extent.

A mix between the two is also sometimes used, with the vampire transforming
between the two forms (like in Buffy). For some reason the lethality of
sunlight is (almost) always retained in both characterizations, though
(except for those few movies that try to be loyal to the original novel).

So, the "evil genius" character?

  It's well known trivia.

No, it only make a noise if there is at least one person to perceive it
as a noise. Noise is a question of perception.

It ALWAYS make a _sound_.

In a variation, older master vampires are imune to Sun light, although
it may prevent them from using some abilities. It's assumed that they
protect themselves with their sheer will.
But, for lesser vampires that have been recently transformed, Sun light
can range from totaly debilitating, causing total paralisis, to
instantly deadly.
As new vampires ages, they may gain some progressive imunity to the Sun,
making it only harmfull rahter than deadly. Something like geting sun
burns in only a few seconds...

As a curious variation (minor spoiler alert), vampires in the Twilight
saga are impervious to sunlight, but they still avoid it because it makes
it very obvious that they are not normal.

People from this planet read and watch movies. Nosferatu is a
well-known classic movie.

Your definition of "well known" terrifies me.

Then again, "well known" and "trivia" are practically antonyms, so...

At this point it shouldn't be any surprise that you wouldn't fare very
well in quiz shows... ;)

Well, yeah, but I don't bother watching those things. There's "trivia"
and then there's "on which day of the week was J. S. Bach born?"

There's a third option - I know the formula (yes, there is one) to
determine the day of the week mentally - so not a guess, but a
calculation.

(Though in this case, I will cop to having looked it up).

Shroeder's cat is always both dead and alive untill someone does observe
it. Then, the cat is ether alive or dead.

That's the copenhagen interpretation. It's not the only possibility.

That's no help; you'd still have to know the date.

No silly ... last time I checked vampires didn't howl, but use your
imagination and I'm sure you can think of something that fits nicely
with the genre that's being discussed ;-)

hey the moon is certainly to blame here ... since I'm able to see my
reflection in the mirror, I'll go ahead and opt out on the vampire thing ;-)

True, and you could have memorised that.

Well... Not all vampires don't cast a reflection in a mirror, especialy
if the mirror is silver free.

Back then, when the novels were writen, mirrors had a silver and mercury
reflective coating. Sime mercury was placed on the glass, then a foil of
silver was spread over it. The whole was then compressed in a stack with
felt cushions for something like 7 years. (the origin of the 7 years bad
luck for breaking a mirror, also the price as a commoner would need to
save for about 7 years to be able to buy one) Over 60% of the mirrors
ended up broken and unusable after that.
In modern mirrors, the silver and mercury are mostly gone.

I'm not saying I doubt that, but I have seen so many urban legends that
this kind of thing immediately tingles my BS detector. I would love to see
some credible reference to this. :)

I think most people miss the point of this question, which is to ask whether
the *cat* observes itself.

Well, that's the *measurable* interpretation. :-) Speculating on why the
measurements are what they are is unscientific unless one comes up with a
way of testing the speculations.

I can find plenty of references to the idea that your reflection is a
representation of your "soul", and breaking it is therefore bad luck.
And the Romans believed that every seven years the soul was renewed.

Or that mirrors used to be extremely expensive, so if you broke
somebody's mirror, you might have to work for them for seven years to
repay them for it.

But basically every Google result claims that the true origins are "vague".

You guys are cracking me up here ... this thread started as a purely
tongue in cheek observation of nocturnal posting habits. I'm amazed at
the over analysis that's going on now. Have mercy ... some of you could
drain every ounce of fun out of a rousing game of trivial pursuit.

Isn't the interpretation such that the state of the particle/molecule/cat
is relative, not absolute? From the cat's own point of view it's definitely
alive or dead, but from an outside frame of reference both states are
superposed until observation from that frame of reference in question.

I think that the question presented by the original thought experiment is
that, if quantum superposition is indeed the correct interpretation, whether
such superpositions apply to macroscopic objects.

Nothing is funnier than overanalyzing things.
