In fact, it turns out that what you wear apparently makes *no difference*.
A couple of my classmates were entered for an event, but due to an
injury they weren't going to do it. Five minutes before the event, they
changed their minds, and just walked on wearing whatever random clothes
they happened to have on. Didn't even have dance shoes. This apparently
made no difference to their scoring.
Worth it...
fancy costume for their kids. Or WTF the *adults* typically spend on
theirs!)

But then, you can't keep the same juges. Ther first impression will
affect the second notes.

True, unless they have no way of knowing who the performers are. Maybe
the performers need to wear masks.
