Looks like the only thing available is palm leaves.
Which makes you wonder - the night before they had a huge bonfire,
right? So what did they fuel that with? And how did they light it?
Actually, my dad just pointed out that Jack still has his pistol with
him, which presumably has a flint...

He's got jewellery on leather thongs, hasn't he? You could probably even do it
with a strip of cloth if you knew what you were doing.

Wood from the crates in the rum stash? Wood from the large number of trees on
the island? Driftwood?
To be honest, in terms of plot holes, these movies have bigger fish to fry.
(I still love them tho ;)

Move over the sun is hurting my eyes. :-)
The eyepiece lens of his telescope (no seafarer travels without one) can
be used to start a fire.

A pistol with "no additional shot nor powder", "a compass that doesn't
point north" and a sword. And not forgetting that hat. These are Captin
Jack Sparrow's effects. And a telescope is not amoung them.
Like my dad suggested, the pistol ought to be useful for lighting things
though.

Oh! It is a youngling thing :-P
The traditional way of starting a fire is with flint and steal. See the
maybe it points south. O_o

He has a small one, it is shown in the second instalment. In the third
instalment he appears to have acquired a vaster one, to out-machismo the other
captain. Savvy?

Indeed, it's so traditional, it's used in old-time pistols.
