Please forgive me if I might have brought up something evil
or on-topic... but is anyone familiar with
http://forums.cgsociety.org/ this forum? I see they don't
have a POV-Ray section.
Anyone have opinions on the site?

...and to think that if *I* said that, I'd be flamed off the planet. ;-)

How could you not know cgsociety.org? I mean, it's only like THE site for
computer graphics?

As much as i liked to, but POV-Ray doesn't really play in the same league.

The Internet is a big place. I'm sure there are hundreds of millions of
websites I've never heard of them. Some of them might even be popular.

I have a membership there, and I go to the forums pretty much every day.
Although CG and VFX is a hobby with me, I enjoy seeing the work and learning
some of the techniques of the people there. Many of the people who post in
the forums there are professional artists and graphics designers, and many
are hoping to be employed in that area.
One problem is that there is a certain amount of snobbishness there, an
assumption that if your software tools aren't used by a large number of paid
professionals in the business, your comments and artwork aren't worth
inclusion. Most of this snobbishness comes from unemployed wannabees though,
and should be taken with a grain of salt. The people who host the forums do
so for the encouragement of increasing the quality of everyone's work, and
they have standards about what images they'll accept for display and
discussion. The people who whine about what they perceive to be poor quality
tools are missing the point. People there do expect you to do good quality
work if you want to play in that sandbox, and there are folks there that set
the bar pretty high.
They do have a full time Blender forum, so it's not about the price of the
tools. They tend to focus on complete production tools for 3D or 2D images,
so POV just naturally wouldn't get as much attention, even if it were
popular. They don't have a Maxwell Render forum either, although it's much
the same thing (you can create whole scenes, objects with materials, and
render them) and it is used by a lot of professionals, especially for
arch-viz.
I do recall that someone from here (can't remember the user name) recently
entered an image in Jeremy Birn's regular lighting challenge over there, and
it was received cordially.
I will say that if you want to see some very impressive 3D artwork, it's a
great place to hang out.
