Woo! I just found a spare Dell OptiPlex 755.
Now, technically I should go replace one of the naff computers in the
office or something. But... damn it, I'm going to replace *my* lame old
PC first. :-P
And my monitor. I don't see why I should be the only person who has to
put up with a flickering monitor.

A yes... best part for me about a new PC has always been... the smell!
That's right - nothing like it. Sure, faster apps, quicker startup, better
graphics are all fine, but I like the smell the best.

OK, you are officially strange.
Personally, I like the shininess. My laptop was really shiny when it was
new. Of course, every time you touch it, it gets more oily. And dust
constantly settles on it. But hey, the laptop it replaced? All the
silver paint has rubbed off revealing the black plastic beneigh. And the
letters have rubbed off the keyboard. (It apparently boggles my mother's
mind that I can still type even though I can't see the letters...)

Good for you.
We stopped sharing 755's only couple of months ago, so considering your
usual level sounds like you're on the bleeding edge :-D.
Seriously, 755 is pretty good workstation. It's nice and pretty quiet
and it's not yet notably slow. If it starts rebooting constantly without
asked to, call to service, then it's a mobo fault ;-).

Doesn't it depend on which options you ask for? I mean, you can select
from a range of specifications, right?

Actually, one user keeps reporting their PC randomly turning itself off
for no apparent reason. (Obviously *I* never get to see this.) Is that a
known problem then?

Well yes, but the platform is nice and as a model it's not that old that
it would be catastrophical.

We had something like 27 mobos changed to 755's because of the constant
rebooting. Dunno if we got a bad share or something, but it was annoying.

Yes, but not because of that.

The best thing? Apparently Flash isn't installed yet, so I don't get all
those pointless Flash adverts blaring at me. :-)
(The weird thing is, it appears to me that Flash *is* installed. It's
just that Firefox seems to think it isn't...)

If you have only the ActiveX -Flash installed, FF can't use it, it's IE
only.
