Apparently GeoCities is shutting down today. I know this because
visiting the XKCD homepage pegged my CPU to 100% kernel-mode usage. It
wasn't easy to close it.
(I think there's something wrong with my graphics subsystem. Anything
remotely graphics-related induces absurd amounts of CPU load...)

Ah yes, but it's a pretty accurate replica of how the Internet used to
be 10 years ago, eh?

I think I must have been the last visitor. I decided to do one more last grab
of all my pages there, and about 2/3 of the way through it I got a notice that
Geocities was now "temporarily unavailable."

Gone, but at least Yahoo! gave users some notice (I got mine in mid-July),
unlike the way they suddenly discontinued Yahoo!Radio.

That's the nice thing about paid-for services: They can be discontinued
at any time, without warning.
(Actually, so can free services, for that matter...)

Sniff. It will be missed.
