I don't know if the Julia fractal in particular has been used, but some
fractals have been used as counter-examples for some mathematical
conjectures, proving them wrong.

Paging Dr. Hofstadter! Dr. Douglas Hofstadter, you have a call... Please
come to the front of the Internet.

One fine day in the middle of the night,
Two dead men got up to fight;
Back-to-back they faced each other,
Drew their swords and shot each other.

And they are, of course, fractals in general are useful for modeling all
kinds of physical stuff, like landscapes, etc. I just don't know I've seen
the Julian set that way.
