Like a checkerboard?

You mean that weird 5x5 multi-plug socket thing? That's quite simple -
consider this arrangement:
+ - + - +
- + - + -
+ - + - +
- + - + -
+ - + - +
No matter what pair of adjacent sockets you choose, you always have both
+ and -. And this being AC, it doesn't matter which is which.
Quite a clever design as a gimmick, though I guess it's no better or
worse than other multi-plug sockets.

Ah yes. I was just looking at vertical and horizontal rows, as in minimal
lengths of wires. Wiring it in a checkerboard makes much more sense in this
application. Thanks!

So do you think that really, actually, truly is connected internally? I mean,
don't lawyers tend to get worked up over this sort of thing? Can you really
sell an extremely dangerous product as long as you include a disclaimer telling
people you're not responsible if the actually use it? The bottom line is that
it's a pretty funny gag, but I'm pretty 'shocked' they actually sell it.

I'm sure the customers never complain.

Neat, and totally impossible in the U.S. Not to mention the whole
polarized plugs thing.

But in that case, death is slow and painful. In this case, death is
quick ... and painful.

I can already hear GlaDDOS speaking...
"To improve motivation, a penulty for failure has been added. Touching
the floor of this chamber will result in an unsatisfactory mark on your
record (followed by death)."

In the UK too. In fact the whole system is polarized, the "neutral" pin of
the AC is always connected to Earth at the substation, so essentially one
pin is always close to Earth voltage and the other carries the AC signal.
This means that some equipment might be designed only to switch the "live"
side, if it was then connected the "wrong" way round, it could be very
dangerous. Nowadays I suspect nothing is actually wired like that, given
that it's always possible someone uses an adaptor, takes it abroad and then
gets electrocuted!
