According to some NHS website, if you're trying to get fit you should
"take the 10,000 step challenge". In other words, attempt to walk 10,000
steps every day.
Out of curiosity, I bought myself a pedometer and set about measuring
how far I walk per day. The graph shows the results for the first two weeks.
Insert your conclusions here.

Excellent that is about 5 miles a day. I've had a couple of pedometers and found
that they encouraged me to walk. Something that I hate doing as my feet ache all
the time :-( My normal stride is IIRC 2.42 feet, yours I imagine would be
longer.

I had this for a while. Try this: Before getting up and putting any weight
onyour feet in the morning, loop a cord (say, a bathrobe belt) around the
balls of your foot, lie back, and pull slow and steady to stretch the toes
towards your knees. This will stretch out the tendons on the bottom of your
foot before you put your weight on them, if that's about where your feet hurt.

It's worth a try. I do something similar if I have cramp in my calf. I don't use
a cord but force my heel out and at the same time point my big toe backwards,
hard.
My problem has, I think, something to do with my shoes. I noticed that I wasn't
having any pain when I was wearing steel toe capped boots even when I was on my
feet all day. So now I wear old fashioned solid leather soled ankle boots. They
cost a small fortune but it's worth it. Suddenly my feet will hurt again and I
know it's time to buy more shoes.
Thanks for listening, I needed that.

How do you figure that?

Well, I discovered that standing on the spot and giggling to the music
counts as "steps". I'm also fairly sure sitting in the car registers as
a few hundred steps too. After all, it's only a tip switch. :-P
I find that when I walk, my calves hurt down the front. I can't decide
whether it's just muscle weakness, or whether I'm actually using the
wrong muscle groups to walk with...

Go to a podiatrist and get custom insoles. That's what I had to do to keep
it from coming back. At one point, I couldn't walk 3 blocks without being in
so much pain I just stopped. It took about a year to get to where my feet
don't hurt regardless of walking.

It doesn't take much to fool a simple machine. :P

Your shin?

You won't need to worry until your trapezius muscle hurts. Then you are using
the wrong muscle group. Remember, oh! Grasshopper. Never, ever put anything in
your ear smaller than your elbow.
Crikey Andrew it is exercising muscles that are not used to it. :-)

That sounds too sensible, why go to someone who specialises in problems of the
foot and lower leg?
I suppose that I can't find either the time or the inclination or I'm a
masochist and I just like moaning.
I might just do it. Thanks for the advice.
