"kanardley" = "Can Hardly".

Try saying it out loud. It becomes obvious. ;-)

Spelling it properly would probably have helped, too.

Meh. It's a linguistic joke. Apparently it doesn't work so well written
down...

Well, yeah, if you know how to pronounce it. :-)

Ok, now I know what the joke should have been, I assume that that Rolls
Kanardley is a type of car. Presumably from Rolls Royce. I can not find
confirmation for that from the internet. Even if I did, why do you
suppose that I (i.e. anybody in this group) knew that, which I didn't?

It could be something similar to Ford Prefect not working as a joke in
the US and Macintosh not in Europe. I mean we might have a thread with a
regional audience.

Well, I'd never heard of it before, but the joke had some context ("down
the hill") which made me think of a car. That plus my best guess at the
pronunciation identified it as a play on words.

Maybe, but there's nothing that I'm aware of that prohibits such a thread
in these forums.....

Sure but even when I plugged that all in, I still did not find it funny,
so I assumed something else was going on. Then again, the subject was a
warning.

No, but it would be nice to know that I am not meant to understand it.
OTOH we have changed topics from book collections to apes even when we
knew that some here could not understand what was going on.
