I'd be surprised if you were even back *from* the USSR. I assumed you
were skiing. Anyway, welcome back, we missed you. E.g. yesterday we had
only 26 messages. That is not good for our reading skills. Luckily we
did not have an occasion where the presence of our mascot was legally
required. But it might be wise to consider appointing a stand in, in
case you more frequently go away.

You know, just yesterday I thought "I haven't heard from Andrew in a while."

Heh. I'm having one train wreck of a morning at work, so don't expect a
high post volume. :-P

Yes, I was thinking the same thing as I read his blog entry on it. Very
well written indeed.

Out of curiosity... what exactly is it that I wrote which impressed you

For me it was an article you wrote to a Haskell board that Darren posted a link
to. I was about making a raytracer in Haskell. I thought that it was very well
written. Not like the "stream of conscience" stuff you write here ;-)

Now I'm puzzled... I don't recollect writing any such thing.
Maybe I'm going senile in my old age? o_O

Ah... the long lost SDL project... heh. I never did get anywhere with
that one! Maybe I should revisit it?
Interesting thing: That page contains a silly half-arsed setup for
implementing get and set functions. Well you know what? There's now a
library on Hackage which works almost exactly the same way. Apparently
I'm not the first person to have thought of this!
I still think making a scene description language in Haskell would be
quite interesting. Of course, given the size of my "unfinished projects"
collection, it's unlikely to go anywhere soon. ;-)

The entire post, not just that bit.
Do I need to quote it to you? You wrote it, it was a very nice piece of
writing.

It just puzzles me that what I wrote was apparently fairly lame, as far
as I can tell, and yet several people seemed to really like it.

What Darren said. It's an exceptionally good piece of writing. Does a
very good job of helping the reader visualize where you were.

Heh. Can you find me on Google Earth? ;-)
(Actually... it makes for some interesting flying. Even on a computer
screen, the simulated mountains seem insanely big. IIRC, Google's images
are from summer though, so not much snow where I was.)

Heh. OK. It would just be nice to know what I'm actually getting right.

Your writing is clear, well organized, evocative, and literate. You also
pick subjects interesting to your readers.

Mmm, really?
(Just the other day Benny was telling me I need to broaden my vocabulary...)

Heh. Except when I write about Haskell. :-P
(It's so popular that they created two special newsgrounds so I could go
talking about Haskell to myself.)
Oh, and messages about my life. (I get yelled at to blog so nobody else
has to read through it...)

Probably not, but that's not really the point. Many people struggle at
descriptive text, but for you it seems to flow naturally. :-)

Yeah, I get that when I'm flying in x-plane as well. But the mountains
here near where I live (2-5 miles away) are recognisable, too.
