Hahahahahaha... ;_;
OK, so guess how I'm spending *my* afternoon? Our main database server
has just suffered some kind of RAID failure, and the RAID controller
can't seem to decide exactly which drive has failed. Yay, me! :-/

Whooohah!
I thought RAID systems were designed to even survive loss of a *complete* hard
disk?!
Then again, most are only designed to survive *loss* of a drive, not a single
stray bit error without any other fault symptoms. So if the RAID controller
told one of the hard disks to "write X", and that hard disk understood it to
mean "write Y", then... well, sounds like a fun afternoon!

They are.
What they handle less well is when a drive's SCSI interface decides to
send garbage over the SCSI link, thwarting communication with all the
other drives.
What it also doesn't handle is when two drives simultaneously die.
And, finally, it doesn't survive if the controller itself malfunctions.
I'm not sure if I've got two broken drives or one broken RAID
controller, but I can't get any sense out of the thing right now.

Waaaa. It's 5:20 and I'm still here. :-{
It seems the plan is to buy a brand new server to replace the existing
one. (Which is mental, really, when you consider that we only need it
for another few weeks...) New server should be here tomorrow morning.
...Until I spoke to the Dell rep. He claims that, actually, it'll be a
few days. (Nobody in the lab can do any work until I get this fixed!)
The guy sent me an email... except the address he sent it to doesn't
work any more [why??], so I didn't get it. So I don't have his name,
email or telephone number. So I can't get him the correct email address.
Nor can I put him through to the guy in the USA trying to push the order
though.
...So now we're trying another supplier to see if they can ship
something straight off the shelf.
THIS IS TOTALLY MENTALISTIC! >_<
I wanna go home...

great time to bring down the database server to figure out what's wrong
with the RAID ;-)

Absolutely! :-}
"Yes, all our servers have redundant power supplies and redundant
harddrives. Unfortunately that didn't save us, so now we're completely
hosed. Sorry."
Great way to build customer confidence...

Sounds like you should blame it on the changes the IT folks in the US are
making. "See, this is why it's supposed to get documented. They logged in
remotely and changed the configuration, and it destroyed the database."

AM or PM?
If it's PM, stop complaining. If it's AM, I'll call up your local pizza
place and order one delivered to you :)
