Hahahahahaha... ;_;

OK, so guess how I'm spending *my* afternoon? Our main database server
has just suffered some kind of RAID failure, and the RAID controller
can't seem to decide exactly which drive has failed. Yay, me! :-/

Whooohah!

I thought RAID systems were designed to even survive loss of a *complete* hard
disk?!

Then again, most are only designed to survive *loss* of a drive, not a single
stray bit error without any other fault symptoms. So if the RAID controller
told one of the hard disks to "write X", and that hard disk understood it to
mean "write Y", then... well, sounds like a fun afternoon!

They are.

What they handle less well is when a drive's SCSI interface decides to
send garbage over the SCSI link, thwarting communication with all the
other drives.

What it also doesn't handle is when two drives simultaneously die.

And, finally, it doesn't survive if the controller itself malfunctions.

I'm not sure if I've got two broken drives or one broken RAID
controller, but I can't get any sense out of the thing right now.

It seems the plan is to buy a brand new server to replace the existing
one. (Which is mental, really, when you consider that we only need it
for another few weeks...) New server should be here tomorrow morning.

...Until I spoke to the Dell rep. He claims that, actually, it'll be a
few days. (Nobody in the lab can do any work until I get this fixed!)
The guy sent me an email... except the address he sent it to doesn't
work any more [why??], so I didn't get it. So I don't have his name,
email or telephone number. So I can't get him the correct email address.
Nor can I put him through to the guy in the USA trying to push the order
though.

...So now we're trying another supplier to see if they can ship
something straight off the shelf.

THIS IS TOTALLY MENTALISTIC! >_<

I wanna go home...

great time to bring down the database server to figure out what's wrong

Sounds like you should blame it on the changes the IT folks in the US are
making. "See, this is why it's supposed to get documented. They logged in
remotely and changed the configuration, and it destroyed the database."

I never tried it myself (heck I have never seen a server rack with my own
eyes in real life), but I even read about someone who had made a cooling
system in a data center to concentrate the heat of all servers on a
pizza-box-sized piece of metal!

Must be a very small data center if it just suffices to keep one single pizza
warm ;)

(Then again, maybe the guy is actually *making* his own pizza ;))

I'm assuming you work 9 to 5.  20 minutes is nothing to worry about;
I've had to stay 3 hours at my job, and I know people who've had to pull
48 hour shifts.

So, yeah, 20 minutes late is nothing to complain about.

For something so important you should probably look into getting a backup
server to switch in if one fails in some way or another. Even our *email*
server has a backup that supposedly automatically switches in if the
original one fails for any reason...

The sad thing is... this system is due to be replaced any day now.

OTOH, it was due to be replaced "any day now" 12 months ago, so...

Subject: And it all goes wrong again
Date: 26 Feb 2009 17:02:52
Message: <49a7118c@news.povray.org>
Oh man, where do I even *start*?

I spent most of today just sitting around *waiting* for my new server to
turn up.

When it finally arrived, I had to waste more time on a conference call
with the IT bods from the USA. (Apparently our director of IT doesn't
know how to set up a conference call - yet he insisted that I sit there
and wait for 45 minutes while he repeatedly tried to get it to work.)

When that finally worked, all I got was a bunch of people asking me dumb
questions. ("Do you know the actual filenames of the database files? Do
you have backups of all of those files? You know you need to install
Windows from the CD and not try to copy the old Windows installation
from tape, right?")

Eventually they shut up and let me get on with my job. But soon I hit
the next snag: They want me to install Windows 2000 Server, but the
manufacturer's setup CD only includes drivers for Windows 2003 Server or
later.

(They think that using 2000 will mean the QA process is simpler - but
then, they think I'm going to follow *their* QA process. Eventually our
QA manager made it clear that the UK is going to be following the UK QA
process. But they still don't really "get it". From where I'm sitting,
it makes no difference at all what OS the server runs - so long as the
software passes the tests we're going to run on it.)

To this end, I spent 2 hours and 20 minutes on the phone to a guy in the
USA while he dithered and dallied over what to do about the problem. (My
repeated cries of "I really need to leave now" and "I've got an
appointment to get to" and "can't we sort this out tomorrow?" fell on
deaf ears.) I wouldn't mind, but I spent most of the time just sitting
around listening to the guy muttering to himself and chatting to his
collegues about the weather.

We did manage to obtain an older version of the setup CD, but it
wouldn't recognise my Windows 2000 CD as containing Windows 2000. (We
don't really know why. The guy claims it's because the CD contains 2000
Server and 2000 Professional. But I think he's just guessing.)

After many, many hours of trying to convince 2000 to install, he finally
agreed to install Windows 2003 Server instead. This worked immediately,
first time. That was at about 7:20, when I *finally* started driving home.

As you can see, this means that now the new server is going to be
configured and set up by an American. Not by me. If they would have just
let me install 2003 in the first place when it became apparent that 2000
wasn't going to work, I could have been *finished* by now. But noooo.

The really irritating part is that *yet again* I'm going to have to put
up with a server that somebody else has configured. If *I* had set it
up, I would have written down every option, every setting, every button
press, every minute detail of the setup as I did it. It would all be
recorded and logged.

But I didn't; the Americans are setting it up. And they don't believe
that recording stuff is "necessary". So tomorrow I'm going to have to
waste hours trying to reverse-engineer what they've done. I find myself
almost *hoping* that something will go wrong so that I will have an
excuse to undo everything they've done and do it myself properly. But I
know there is almost no chance of that happening.

I have a really worrying feeling that their "Oracle expert" might
attempt to repair the Oracle database for me. I deeply hope that doesn't
happen. Who knows what kind of a train wreck I'd end up having to fix...

On the other hand, we're supposed to be getting rid of this whole system
"any day now". So this new server and all the new problems it's now
going to have might not even have to run for very long. Maybe if I keep
telling myself that, it'll start to not seem so terrible...

Heh, a couple weeks ago, I wished I could have gotten out at 7:20.

I was diagnosing a system problem until 10:15 PM. And I currently am not
a member of an IT organization or a support organization. But I have the
expertise on what was broken and was able to fix it - and it's a system I
use for my part of the business.

Late nights are part of the IT gig. :-)

Oh fun. :-)

I've done 30-40 hours of continuously being awake when I was in IT, after
a while it becomes fun. But I'm glad I didn't have to drive home. :-)

I was teaching a class in NYC a few years ago, and one of the students
had to remotely build a server starting one night during class; he didn't
get in until noon, and he had a few choice words about the person who
decided that upgrading the system while he was out was a good idea.

The server was located somewhere in the central US, where he flew from to
take the class. I imagine there were words about the travel expense
being diminished because of the idiot who decided to upgrade the system.

I posted a message a few weeks ago saying she was *going* to leave.
Tomorrow is actually her last day. (Hence, cake.)

And I'm going to be spending all day with my head in the server room, so
I won't even get to say goodbye...

Uhuh. And tell me, did they pay you good money for that? Did they
appreciate what you did? Because my employer does neither of those things...

take a break and step out to say goodbye

10 minutes isn't going to kill anyone

in the scheme of things, staying to work the 10 minutes won't fix the
problems 10 minutes sooner

Relative normality has finally been restored. It's *so* nice to sit
around and do nothing for a while...

Well, I saw her a few times today. All my attempts at talking to her
more or less failed. She more or less blanked me.

And now she's gone forever. I guess I'm stupid to miss her... but I do.

Yes. For one thing, they paid off my house.

Oh, I know. I just thought it was an amusing story.

I actually agree. If you're bored at work, you aren't earning your keep.

I think we've already figured out that I'm in the wrong job. :-P

I've had one job where if I was bored then I'd earned my keep.

Seriously, in almost 40 years of working I've had one job where the bosses were
pleased to see any of us reading or watching TV. That was when I was working in
the newspaper industry as a maintenance engineer. If we were working it meant
that there was a problem. It is the way it should be but seldom is.

On top of that we have a cold-stand by -machine for each different
server hardware (also active devices) we're using, so if some server eg.
loses a motherboard, just swap the disks to c-sb and continue working,
so there's no rush for 1hr oslt response times from the service.

I know one guy who got a job watching for light bulbs to burn out - in
particular, the lights that tell airplanes not to run into things.
Apparently, having an automatic mechanism to tell you the red lights on
radio masts and buildings and such have burned out isn't sufficient. You
also have to have someone in the room to make sure the automatic mechanism
doesn't fail.

I'm quite sure that I wouldn't like that job, being bored and having to be
attentive. I prefer jobs where you can do home jobs when there is nothing
official to do. As, I'm sure, you can imagine. ;)
