I don't know about his graphics card, but I can sort of monitor my GPU's
temperature by listening to the fan. It seems to speed up when I ask the
GPU to do some work, and slow down again afterwards. Although nothing I
have yet run has made it speed up all that much... I guess it's cold in
my room or something.

Yes, but what I find questionable is the *timing* of these laws.

WW2 and the nazi regime happened over 50 years ago. Why exactly are these
laws being enacted *now*. Why werent't they enacted in the 50's or 60's?

I also find it ridiculous to ban the swastica as the nazi symbol.
Do they honestly think that outlawing a symbol is going to diminish the
amount of hatred, xenofobia, racism and anger people have?

What they *really* want is to outlaw certain political ideologies. But
they cannot do that (yet) because it would break certain constitutional
principles. Thus they invent these ridiculous laws to get around the problem.
Since these undesired political ideologies tend to use certain symbols to
visually express their stance, what the government does is to ban the
symbols, so that they will have an excuse to punish the people with those
unwanted political ideologies.

Of course this won't stop the political ideologies from proliferating.
It will only cause these people to express them in other (still not
outlawed) ways.

You can only "monitor" the temperature up to a certain point by listening,
because the fan won't go faster than a certain speed. You have no way of
knowing if it's actually overheating.

When I turn the computer on, the fan spins up to maximum speed. While
the computer is running, it has never (yet) gone anywhere near that
fast. But yes, if it did reach that point, there would be no way to tell
if it really wanted to go faster still.

Ah yes, the annoying thing about Crysis: You look on your map to see
where you're supposed to be going, walk in that direction, and discover
there's a 200 foot cliff face in the way. :-/

(Actually, that's not true. The *most* annoying thing about Crysis is
how feeble all your guns are...)

Windows reported that the crash was in the ATI driver. The Catalyst
Control Center has a monitor section, so I'll try it out tomorrow and
see how hot it gets.

FWIW, I bought this card on Ebay, and it came with a ridiculously large
aftermarket fan attached. I thought that was a little odd (since I was
already getting a good price on the card, and the fan should cost even
more), until I plugged it in and noticed a faint ghost image offset from
the actual image by a few millimeters.

I strongly suspect that the previous owner of this card overheated it,
panicked, slapped a large fan on it, and put it on Ebay.

Still, it runs quite well, and I haven't had any problems in other games
(even UT3, which is quite new as well). The ghosting isn't noticeable
in games (too much motion), and I've learned to ignore it when working
with text.

To what laws are you referring? There have been laws since 1945 forbiding
it (under the allies) and different laws since then. It is hardly new.
The current § 86a is from 1994 after several neonazi mobs killed people.
§86 is older and basically tells the same.

Such as overthrowing democracy? Yes we want to prevent that. The concept
is called "Streitbare Demokratie":

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Streitbare_Demokratie

Germany was a democracy when Hitler was elected by the people. All of
those ideologies want to abolish the democratic order of germany.

I swam onto the beach at the beginning of the game, and got about 40
FPS. If you swing the camera around enough for motion blur to kick in,
it drops slightly, but not much. Night vision appears to make no difference.

The cutscene where they find Astec dropped to about 18 FPS. Some really
large scenic vistas take it as low as 15 FPS (though curiosly an entire
frame full of dense jungle is no problem, only long-range views).
Typically the framerate stays above 25 FPS, which is all the monitor can
physically display anyway, so I'm happy.

This is at 1680x1050 (the native resolution of my LCD) with everything
set to "high" plus 8x antialias.

Are you saying that democracy is a bad thing? Because it certainly looks
that way.

Well, I actually wouldn't find it surprising even if it were true,
because that seems to be a common trend in Europe nowadays: Democracy
and freedom of opinion is a bad thing because it allows some people to
have the wrong opinions.

Some people say (something along the lines of): "Freedom of opinion
doesn't mean you can be a racist." Well, freedom of opinion means precisely
that you can be a racist if you want, or support whatever else ideology you
want. That's precisely what it means. If you outlaw opinions, you are
suppressing freedom.

Allowing people to have certain opinions doesn't mean you support those
opinions or agree with them.

I certainly detest some people's opinions (such as racism and nazism),
but they just have the right to have an opinion. If they start harming
other people, that's a completely different issue, but as long as they
are only opinions and don't bother others, that's their right.

However, in modern Europe it's more and more common to forbid certain
opinions (even if it's not still de jure, very certainly de facto).

No and I don't see how you can read my post that way.

My point is that we have to protect democracy itself. The failure of the
first democracy of Weimars republic was partly because we didn't have
measures to prevent a democratically elected chancellor to overturn
democracy. These laws are a consequence of the failure of the first
democracy.

There is no law in germany outlawing racism.

Do you think there is / was no harm done with propaganda? Do you think
there is no guilt in convincing other people to murder if you don't
murder yourself? Surely there have been high Nazis who let others do the
dirty work of killing. Does that mean they are free of guilt, because
they just offered an opinion? I really don't think so.

Your argument would hold more water if you could point to recent law
changes which restrict your speech in new ways.

As Floridan said, some have been around for many, many years.

Well, for the more modern laws, I can only speculate that there is
perhaps a resurgence of those ideas and that's what's prompted an
apparent rise in political awareness of it in the country.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but it is a very strong symbol.
Outlawing it (which as has been mentioned elsewhere, by Florian, I
believe, isn't strictly what's happened) raises people's awareness of it.

That happens with all sorts of laws, not just laws of this type - we
criminalize behaviour that isn't inherently criminal itself.

Yes, but from what I understand in Germany, outlawing some of the symbols
has slowed any serious movement down.

Just played for 2 1/2 hours, and no crashes. The first 45 minutes, I
was playing with it in a window, and noting the GPU temperature & fan
speed every 30 seconds or so.

Since nothing happened, I went back to fullscreen, and I haven't had any
problems since. Weird, but at least it's playable.

And damn fine fun :)

BTW, I haven't had any problems at all with the cloak. Lie prone, and
you can sneak a good 50 yards on a single charge. What's really fun is
to lie prone & cloak, snipe some KPA, then sneak off ten paces and wait
for his buddies to see what the problem is. They don't have any idea
where you are, and as long as you don't move the cloak lasts ages,
meaning you can wait until they start to wander off and then pick off
some poor lonely sap, starting it all over again :)

Apparently that was with one core dedicated to POV-Ray. I forgot I had
it running. Stopping it doesn't appear to drastically affect game
performance either positively or negatively, however.

During the epic tank battle, FPS drops down to about 12, but goes no lower.

Yes, the 80s in Western Europe saw a rise of neonazism, Holocaust denial and
anti-immigration parties, and not just in Germany. There was a return to
pre-WW2 hate rhetorics that was (and still is) bothering.
The other factor was that Holocaust scholarship only began in the 60s and
became mature in the 80s. Only then we had a comprehensive, detailed
understanding of the mechanics of genocide and the work is still ongoing due
to the mountains of archives now available in Russia and other ex-communist
countries. Particularly, studies of the perpetrators' motives (i.e. what
turned decent, ordinary people motives into killers) date from the 90s.
Unfortunately, we saw these mechanics in action in the Balkans, in Rwanda
and other parts of the world. All of this informed the more restrictive
policies relative to hate speech and hate activities taken in Europe in the
past 20 years.

> Yes, but from what I understand in Germany, outlawing some of the symbols

I guess the main point is to create social taboos strong enough so that they
don't break easily whenever there's a crisis. In that sense they have been
relatively successful as a containment policy: small groups still use hate
rhetorics and engage in hate activities but their ideas don't spill over to
the general population. These taboos didn't exist in pre-WW2 Europe, where
part of the population was quite receptive to such ideas and turned against
their neighbours.

Do you understand the concepts of "de jure" and "de facto"?

Just because there's not (yet) written law doesn't mean that punishments
are not being imposed (usually by using some other convenient laws as an
excuse).

Just for fun, I replayed the game, but pretending I'm an unkillable
force of nature.

Oddly, this somehow made the early parts of the game somewhat easier.
(Or maybe that's just already knowing exactly what's going to happen
next before it happens?)

I did try to grab one of the NKs. Actually, I ran up to one, and it
seems doing that kinda flattened him and killed him right there! o_O

The second guy, I managed to grab him. Oddly, he made no apparent
attempt to escape while I spent 10 minutes reconfiguring the suit for
strength mode, and then threw him half way across the map.

Shooting them both would probably have been easier though.

Actually, wait... given the gun's lack of accuracy, maybe not. :-P

Try grabbing one, throwing him in the air, and shooting him before he

What are you, a killer whale? :-P

I doubt there'd be sufficient time to change weapons before he hits the
ground. It takes a long time to change weapons - and from anything but
point-blank range, aim is hopeless.

Hate ideology, for example antisemitism, not only by radical activists
but by elected politicians themselves, is nowadays as strong as ever. Only
the excuses and namecalling have changed, but not the basic fact. Reading
some of the antisemitistic hate speeches of some western elected politicians
gives an eerie feeling of similar speeches in Germany in the 30's.

I'm exaggerating? Maybe. But not by much. Just read, for example, this:

http://www.thelocal.se/17466/20090209/

(And I recommend reading the entire article, not just the first few
paragraphs.)

Crysis 2 is being worked on, so for the time-being, you have to try
Warhead. :)

I think I did it in about 12 hours, and that was stealthily.

Now you can play my map if you like:
http://www.crymod.com/filebase.php?fileid=2305&lim=0&letter=T

Let me know what you think.

Ah, the VTOL. I found that hard too at the beginning, but just move your

Heh. Maybe if I'd gone for the triple GTX 280 option it would have given
me consistently high framerates all through. :-P But I actually suspect
my CPU is the bottleneck here. They recommend on quite a bit faster than
what I have.

This was on the lowest difficulty setting available.

My mistake was trying to follow the river. I eventually figured out that
I actually want to go the other way. Once you sneak into the bushes and
get far enough away, people stop chasing you.

Except that it has a maximum rate of turn of about 3° per year. :-P

Ah yes. Crysis and Warhead are both about £17 each, but if you buy then
as a pair through Steam, you save... 99p? WTF?? How is that worth it?!

It's not apart from with Warhead you get Wars MP free. Now wait until you
try that suit with real people, heh... :)

Cool, thanks. I think you'll enjoy it but you'll have to update to
patch 1.2 to get the objectives to work:
http://www.crymod.com/filebase.php?fileid=1073

It's a crazy map and it's supposed to be part 1 of 3, but before I get
to 2 and 3, I'll update part 1 first.

Ah, I think I know what you mean. Try a long (steady) arcing sweep across
your mouse mat to turn. It's the same with turning turrets on some tanks.
And don't forget that you can use Q and E to strafe in the VTOL (hit your
left shift key for speed while doing this). Actually, the more I think about
it, the more I realise how versatile the VTOL really is.

Yeah. "Nomad, take the Gauss rifle" was my first clue.

As far as I can tell, it's like a shotgun, but less damaging.

As far as I can tell, the Shift key doesn't do anything.

But then, just controling the altitude was hard enough. Pressing space
is ment to make you go higher - but doesn't always seem to work...

The Q and E keys do indeed tip the craft sideways, but don't appear to
do anything else. Hell, sometimes even the forward and backward keys
don't seem to be doing anything!

Huh? That rifle will take out a Scout alien with 2-3 shots, a shotty
will never do that. Hit an NK with a Gauss and he should fly back a few
hundred yards.

It's interesting. Everybody I've spoken to seems to think all the
weapons are really powerful, and the game is easy, and you can just
storm through it. I'm seriously starting to wonder if I'm playing the
same game here... :-P

There doesn't seem to be a *huge* difference in power between the Gauss
and the shotgun, so maybe it's psychological. When you fire the shotgun,
it makes a nice bang and fires a visible projectile. The Gauss just
shimmers a bit. Maybe that makes it seem less powerful? Certainly both
guns require an absurd number of shots to take anything down.

(Obviously I tried to avoid using either of them except where necessary.
In other words, when I've run out of ammo for everything else. Which was
mainly during the final battle on the aircraft carrier...)

You seem to be playing a different game to me. Did you update to 1.2?
You should. Not that it should make a difference to the controls of the
VTOL. Try hitting F1 twice for 3rd person view, it's easier to fly around.

More exactly, I believe Steam should.

Is there a way I can tell from the tiny version numbers in the corner of
the setup screen?

Of course, forgot you did it that way.

If Steam automatically updated the game to 1.2, then it should read:
1.1.1.6115

But if Steam has updated to the hotfix of 1.21, then I don't know what
the version number will be as I don't have 1.21 installed. The hotfix 1.21
is really only for the multiplayer side of the game so I'm not sure if Steam
would update this.

Yeah sure. It's only the VTOL that has three views, the first view
being inside the cockpit with the full HUD, the second is the same view but
without the HUD, and the third is 3rd person. Ground vehicles only have 1st
and 3rd views, and you can't use it with the player. (You can in the editor
though).

Just tried it. Apparently the Gauss rifle does in fact kill humans.
(Previously I'd only tried in on the aliens, who are unkillable AFAIK.)

Ok, well, research says that that 'is' the hotfix version number. So
you're updated buddy. ;)

No, no - Linux is *designed* for nerds, by nerds. Today it has lots of
shiny front-ends, but as soon as something happens under the covers that
the GUI isn't expecting or doesn't handle correctly, you're straight
back into nerd land. :-)

I'm definitely not as far as you, but I don't think the game is easy, OR
all the weapons powerful.

The sniper rifle, of course, is insanely effective combined with Cloak
:) Cue Bishop from UT: "One shot, one kill!"

My latest "fun" tactic (which I've actually found quite effective): Turn
speed on, run right up to the enemy soldiers, grab them by the throat,
and run out before the others can shoot you! It's like I'm the human
counterpart to the flying spaghetti monster who's been grabbing my guys :)

...except that, for the most part, the sniper rifle doesn't seem to kill
things. :-(

(One of the guys from my clan claims you have to hit them in the head
for it to work. Also, the guys in those lookout posts have a habit of
randomly ducking even though they can't possibly know I'm there...)

...except that you can only ran 20 yard before you run out of energy.
And by that point God-knows how many enemies will be firing rocket
launchers and shotguns and sniper rifles and SMGs at you, so you'll be dead.

I do find it kind of amusing how you can grab somebody by the throat and
they just *stand* there, not attempting to escape. I guess I do have it
on the very lowest difficulty setting...

I've killed everyone I've shot at with it :O

Don't run constantly; tap the shift key to give yourself short bursts.

So? Grab/throw, run to next guy, rinse & repeat. After seeing you
throw one guy in the air, about half the others will turn & run. Not to
mention their aim isn't THAT good (after you sprint a few yard, they
typically need a few seconds before they can hit you well, and by that
time you've moved on).

Granted, it's not like I'm invincible or anything; I tend to die four or
five times for every major fight I'm in before I get past it.

So I finally got time to finish it this weekend... and I can't :(

I'm on the aircraft carrier, and facing off against the big walking
thing that I saw in the valley.

I have a dual core CPU, 3 gigs of RAM, and a 48xx series video card.
I've set all the graphical options to "Low". I'm playing in a
full-screen 800x600 resolution.

And I get MAYbe 5-10 fps. Plus, every 10-15 seconds the game will
completely freeze for 3-5 seconds.

I understand futureproofing your game (they never expected anyone to run
it at its highest settings when it came out), but the quality levels
SHOULD provide consistent experiences across the game. How the game
plays on the "Low" settings, for instance, should be how it *always*
plays on the "Low" setting. Not 90+ fps in one part of the game, and
the situation I described above in another (*especially* when you're so
close to the end... it's not like I can just stop playing now, I need
the emotional release that you get when you finish it!)

Jesus. o_O

Heh. And to think people were telling me I should buy ATI rather than
nVidia...

To be fair, I think my vid card is damaged. I bought it used on eBay,
and I've had several problems with it (it crashes often, there's
ghosting in the image, etc).

I think I'm only buying new cards after this one... the savings aren't
worth the headache...

Anyway, I think there was also a memory leak in Crysis, because my
pagefile got to be so huge (7 gigs, in fact). Restarting the program
made it run great again for a few minutes, then back to what it was.

I've just downloaded patch 1.2, and hopefully that'll fix things.

Erm, yes.

Oh, OK. I had that from the beginning. ;-)

Oh, *sure*. ;-)

Well, I traded the abysmally poor performance & crashing for mildly poor
performance & graphical glitches. At least I was able to finish it :)

Although, after that ending, I think I need to play Warhead next. It's
about Psycho, isn't it? If so, I'd expect them to do a third one about
Prophet.

By the way, I loved Strickland's quote: "I'm a Marine, son! I'll
f***ing walk on water if I have to!"

:)
