Well, now I'm really heartbroken.
I've got a shiny new GPU that I've spent hundreds of pounds on, and it's
taken me over a week to get to the stage where I can use it. This should
be the crowning glory!
However...
- My old GPU was already fast enough to do just about anything you could
want. The new one is approximately 4x better according to 3Dmark 05, but
since the old one was already good enough, there's not really any
visible benefit.
- It comes with a free license key to unlock the full version of 3Dmark
Vantage. I've run several versions of 3Dmark, but always the crippled
"free" version that hardly does anything. Finally, I can run a full
version... Wait, no I can't. It *demands* Windows Vista and refuses to
work without it. (Which I guess is fair enough; it's entire purpose is
to test all the new DirectX 10 stuff.)
- One night I sat down and ran all the demos from nVidia's website. The
last few wouldn't run because I only had a 7-series GPU. In particular,
I dearly wanted to run Cascades. Now I have a suitable GPU, and I can
fina- wait, no, *this* demands DirectX 10 also. As do almost all the
demos I couldn't run before, actually.
- One of the main reasons I went for this super-expensive GPU rather
than just buying a much cheaper model was so that I could have CUDA
support. I'm extremely excited about this technology, which became
available just *after* I got my previous card. Finally I have a suitable
GPU, and there's a Flame renderer that I dearly want to use. It does the
same thing as the normal Flame renderer, just 50x faster! 8-D Except
that... I can't make it work. It will render on the CPU, but nothing I
do can convince it to use my beautiful new GPU to go trippy-fast.
In short, every single thing I wanted to do now I have this new GPU
actually fails to work. I've spent hundreds and hundreds of pounds for
nothing.
I want a hug... :'{

Now I'm puzzled. What is it that you do with your computer if you don't
play games? You don't sound to me like a person who owns a computer to do
business with it, so what else is a computer nerd going to do with it?
Want some bang for your buck? Then go and buy same recent games.
Try, for example, BioShock or Mirror's Edge.

Advice: When you're going to shell out lots of money, do your research
to find out whether the product can actually do what you want.

Both of which are pretty cool, actually. Altho I only played the demo of
Mirror's Edge. :-)

What's the name of this news server? ;-)
No, seriously... I run POV-Ray, FractInt, Apophysis, and various other
compute-bounded pretty picture generators. I also have almost £2,000 of
music production software installed. There are of course always new
programs to be written - in Haskell, naturally. And let us not forget
chattering to you lot! :-P
Then there's the various computer games I play. Until HL2 came out, I
never used to play computer games at all really. But since HL2, I've
been playing quite a few Valve titles - the HL2 series, CSS, and most
recently TF2.
> Want some bang for your buck? Then go and buy same recent games.

I was under the impression that TF2 and HL2:EP2 *are* pretty recent
games. ;-)
But anyway, I'm looking at getting hold of Crisis at some point.
Presumably that will be a suitably vertical test of my hardware... (!)
(I'm also looking at Call of Duty 4, since apparently it's available for
PC. Although the game everybody in my clan is talking about is Left 4
Dead...)

Yeah. I made the mistake of assuming that just because the product I
bought says CUDA all over it, it would be able to do CUDA...

Seriously, if you want to 'test' your new kit, go and get Crysis. Load it up
and put everything on 'High'. If you get something like 30 - 40 fps with
*amazing* graphics, then it's working. :)
Or... How about doing this?

Can't say I've tried it, but I'm tempted if it will be useful.

Heh. I just did that with CSS and TF2. Actually most of the settings
were already at maximum, but I was able to turn on antialiasing (at the
maximum setting) and anisotropic texture filtering (at the maximum
setting). The difference in sharpness was modestly impressive.
TF2 also allowed me to change the texture detail from "high" to "very
high". You know how I was saying the other day that you can't read the
writing on things in computer games? Well... now you can! o_O I notice
that not *all* the textures actually increase in resolution, but those
that do... Damn, I can see the brushmarks where the walls have been
painted, the grain in the wooden limbers, little bubbles in the
paintwork, and I can now *read* all the posters and signs around the
place. Yay, me!
Now, I just had a look on Steam to see if you can purchase Crysis that
way. Apparently you can (FarCry too. But I already have that.) So I
clicked on Crysis to read about it, and it says "to continue, please
enter your birthday".
Uh... WTF?

Interesting. The page even claims it makes DirectX 10 work on machines
lacking the necessary hardware acceleration. (I.e., it will work even
without a DirectX 10 video card.) I'm almost tempted with this. :-P

Cool. It will be a new experience for you. Crysis was built to test DX10,
and some say that it runs better on DX9, but from what I've seen there
really isn't a lot of difference on high settings, it's all good. :)

I notice that my CPU is below the minimum requirements. This should be

Of course, today knowing the clock speed of the CPU tells you almost
nothing. ;-) [My 2.2 GHz Athlon64 X2 probably beats the **** out of a 4
GHz Pentium IV.]

I found that too five minutes ago.
Unfortunately, closing Process Explorer still doesn't let me run the game.

Earlier versions of PE loaded a driver that does not get unloaded when you
exit PE. Newer versions do not have this problem, i.e. closing PE is
enough.

That's not the point of the question. The point of the question is legal
coverage. Valve doesn't care if children see it. Valve only cares if lawyers
will yell at them for letting children see it.

Yes, I do know that - it's kinda stupid that one has to cover oneself
using a method that anyone/everyone lies when using.
I'm over 18 (obviously) and I sometimes use fake dates on those age
verification forms, because I'm old enough and by how much isn't any of
their business.

LOL, good one. :-)

Leisure Suit Larry had such question at the start of the game. I once
tested what it says if you answer under 18 :).

If there's pull-down menus, it's enough to check the year far enough,
then just slap something to month and date.

Have you actually researched CUDA?
Do you plan on using it yourself?
I've looked into it a bit, and it's not useful for anything I would want
to do.
There actually IS a version of TMPGEnc that uses it... to run slower
than an Intel Core 2 Quad. Great achievement, NVidia.
OpenCL, whenever it gets released (the specs have been finalized, I
believe) *looks* useful, just like CUDA *looks* useful (although OpenCL
is vendor agnostic, so you've got access to a much larger installed
base), but we have no way of knowing how fast things will run until AMD
and NVidia get some implementations finished & shipped (hopefully later
this year, but if they have to cut staff then maybe early next).

I remember that, yeah. Used to sell it, in fact - even though I was
under 18. That was kinda weird, but it was a funny game.

Yeah, though often I'll pick the earliest year. I figure if they're
using the data for demographic research, something that throws the stats
off is a bonus. ;-)
