Ah, I love benchmarks. You can argue about memory bandwidth or cache
sizes or price points all day, but a benchmark shows you what's
happening in the real world.
Right, so let's look at this benchmark. The GeForce 7900 GT is *clearly*
the loser. It has been thoroughly PWN3D in every single test. Some show
the other cards as up to 8x faster.
Now, the GeForce 280 is roughly 5x the price of the GeForce 260. And
thus you would expect a corresponding difference in performance. I don't
see one. Actually, in almost all cases, the two cards look remarkably
similar in performance. The 280 is maybe 3% or even as much as 10%
faster. Big deal. For 5x the price? I don't think I'll bother.
See, that's why I love benchmarks! :-D
Also... I'm loving the way even the big meat just can't handle Crysis.
That game came out, what, 7 years ago? And *still* today no graphics
card can run it properly. WTF? It's like the Vista of the gaming world...

FSX will certainly choke even the beefiest SLI systems. I hate FSX. It's
always a a trade-off between beautiful visuals and looks like crap but
at least runs at better than 15fps.

What comfuses me is the number of benchmarks where SLI systems are
several percent *slower* than non-SLI. WTF?

"Crysis is a science fiction first-person shooter computer game
developed by German video game developer Crytek and published by
Electronic Arts, and is the first game of a planned trilogy. It
was released on November 2007."
Either your counting *really* sucks, or you are confusing it with FarCry
(which, btw, was published less than 5 years ago).

Wait, it was only released last year? It seems like people have been

To understand why this is important:
http://tinyurl.com/7wrmqu
Last time I tried to post this stuff to Zazzle, I gave up after about 40
hours of rendering. It *still* wasn't of satisfactory quality! But with
a 50x speedup [it doesn't say against which CPU], it's plausible that I
might *finally* be able to generate high-quality images!
(Note that rendering is *not* resumable! Hence 40 hours of rendering
requires me to go without sleep, etc.)

Heh. I'm not *that* much of a nerd quite yet. ;-)
No, the multiple fans make too much noise. (Not to mention the two blue
LEDs illuminate the entire room sufficiently to enable photopic vision...)

1) Move it to another room?
2) Buy a quieter case. There are ones which are really quiet.

This requires the avilability of a room to move it to. (This isn't my
house, remember?)

Well, buy a whole new PC perhaps... This one is powered by a lowly
Athlon64 X2 4200+. Cutting edge a while back, but obsolete now.
Most of the noise, however, comes from the GPU fan. And the 4 HDs...

There is no noticable variation in the loudness of the system. It sounds
just as loud under no load as it does with 100% CPU and GPU load and all
drives thrashing madly.

No. But given the noise problem, I have little incentive to dismantle
the case to try to figure out how to disable the fan LEDs without
disabling the fans themselves.

Running Windows? Go google for "speedfan" and throw it on there. It takes
some playing to get right, sometimes.

OOI I switched off Vista's UAC to install the new Beta and speedfan reported the
HDD temp. When I switched UAC on again only the core temperature showed.

Are you running speedfan as administrator? I do believe Vista has some weird
ideas about what's privileged and what isn't. :-)

You're telling me :)
I'm running it in an administrator account but not as administrator. When I ran
it as administrator I got both temps. But only the HDD temp shows in the task
bar, the core temp does not.

The administrator account by default has UAC turned off. Maybe that's what
you mean, or maybe that's info new to you, but I suspect it's the explanation.
> But only the HDD temp shows in the task bar, the core temp does not.
I think the task bar only shows one temperature, and it's set with a
checkmark somewhere in the UI that says which it shows. As long as you see
it on the full window, it's being monitored. (Same with the fan speed, if
you display that instead.)

I have the UAC turned on, on this administrator account I meant that by
selecting the program from the start menu, right clicking and selecting "Run as
administrator"

I see. As I understand it, that doesn't actually log you on as
administrator. Instead, when you log into an account in the Administrators
group, you get two logins: one with admin privs, one without. The "run as
administrator" means "run with admin privs", not "run under the account
named Administrator". The account with the name "Administrator" is by
default configured to launch every process with administrative privs.
> I could not find that checkmark.

up and see if I can find it. Sorry.

One of my bosses once was color blind. He used navy blue on neon pink, and
forest green with a bright orange background. You could blind yourself just
walking past his office.
It didn't help that one of the color guns was misaligned, so everything had
a 2-pixel fringe around it he couldn't see.

Yes, I've seen some websites like that. Why mention colour blindness
though? I'm colour blind, but I see blue just fine, and I see teal fine too,
(which is what my colour scheme is).
Dark blue:

AIUI those apps have to work out from the specific motherboard and other
hardware where to read those temperatures and fan speeds from. As all
motherboards can be different and there is no standard, it is possible the
application doesn't support all hardware.

I did upgrade last week. It is a Toshiba laptop I have it installed on and I
only really care about the core temperature. Although out of curiosity I'll find
another monitoring programme and see what it shows.

Core Temp http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ showed values for both cores but I
could not find an application that would show me the fan speeds.

Because that's the reason he did it. :-)
If the blue border around the solid color at

doesn't make your eyes ache, you *are* color blind.

Why is there a chainsaw in DOOM?
There aren't any trees on Mars.

Ummm, Crysis came out in '07 I think and my GTX280 can play it in 1080p on
my LCD TV with every graphics option switched on full and it plays fine.
There are a lot of cards that can take Crysis these days, its certainly no
where near the power hog it used to be with respect to the current crop of
hardware.
Cheers Dre
