What a carry on with my laptop. It was refusing to boot up 4 times out of 5,
shutting down hard just after the option to enter the bios. So I reinstalled
Vista, would you believe it formatted my HDD not just the vista partition.
Luckily I saved all my Pov files (16 Gigs including meshes) to an external HDD.
Now I'm in the process of loading all the programmes I use. At least I can
winnow out the ones I installed but don't use. I bought a 1 TB external drive so
I won't have to do that again, just restore an image.
Phew!

LOL, I hope there have been other sysadmins available who have managed a 
backup. :-)

A crashed hard drive, though, is a great way to clear the cruft off the 
drive.  It's just too bad it takes the other stuff away as well.

I was installing X-Plane (a really good flight sim) on my system here, 
and ran out of disk space; installing all the scenery requires 70 GB of 
space (it comes on 6 DL DVDs).  I started digging through the drive and 
found a whole bunch of old junk I no longer needed.

Probably better than a hard drive crash, too.  :-)

Sysadmin, whatever gave you the idea that I'd ever been a sysadmin? Maintenance
and hardware maintenance at that. :)

There has been several occasions that I've asked for a restore of files from
backups and never had a result. But I managed to do a restore today to a basic
Vista installation without messing any other files up. Unfortunately my laptop
has developed a hardware fault where the black parts of the screen turn a
rastered green when the screen is opened too far. And it was not booting
properly from CD, shutting down with a "clunk". What I don't believe is it still
has a couple of months of warranty left.

LOL.  That it is; sadly, the latest video driver borked something up, and 
the sim wouldn't run anymore.  Fortunately, I was able to downgrade the 
driver to the one that actually works, as opposed to NVidia's idea of a 
"working new driver" that is in fact braindead and broken.  Nice of them 
to test it.

I was going to say, Richmond Hill is in Ontario, Canada (I have a friend 
who lives there, coincidentally) - a suburb of Toronto.

freed up when you don't keep old versions of VMware (for example).

BTDT.  Actually, my buddy there took me up to the CN Tower - one of the 
tallest structures of its type in the world (in fact, the largest IIRC).  
I'm sure the view was amazing during the day, but we got up there after 
dark, so really all I could see were some city lights and a big black 
space where the lake is.

Well, ordinarily yes, but when Pratchforth's Restriction is in play (as 
it obviously would be when U-Turns aren't allowed (see pp 172-174 & page 
227 of Stovold's rules)), all direct routes between those two points are 
in fact blocked.  You don't think I'd make that move to Camden Road if 
that restriction weren't in place, do you? ;-)

That also was a factor in my recent hard drive purge as well - in fact, 
it was a fair amount of OSS source code that I'd unpacked and built and 
then left the directories (with code, object files, and executables) all 
in my downloads directory.  That's a good way to waste space. :-)

With me it tends to be meshes and image maps that are duplicated all over my
HDD. And versions of Pov animations, modeller files, Pov files and mpegs.

Oh, yes, very much so.  The ride on the lift was interesting, because you 
can look out on the world as you go up.  Then there's the observation 
deck - you can stand on a glass floor (not ordinary glass, natch) and 
look straight down 1500+ feet.

Well, then I'll stick with the northern line, and in honour of the fallen 
arch at Arches National Monument in southern Utah, I'll get off at

Indeed.  Text file compression is useful and very good.  Had to do that 
yesterday - first time in 6 years I've actually done work on a production 
system, pity it was diagnosis and troubleshooting.  I remember the late 
nights now, didn't get home until 2300.

It was actually a lot of fun, got to use tools I was trained on but only 
rarely used at all (of course, low-level database editing is ugly and 
there was one misstep, not a critical one, but caused by the fact that 
remote controlling a remote control session by remote control (yes, three 
redirections) caused me to type CTRL-U and for it to be repeated about 50 
times on the target system.  Whoops.

I'll take the HA8 to Stanmore and see if the Harrow Computer Club is having a
meeting. It is the oldest Computer Club in England and I'm one of the youngest
members :)

Hmmm, interesting move, and somewhat unexpected, largely because I'm 
unfamiliar with the bus routes. :-)

I think I should start heading to GLLUG, then - looks like the 
Metropolitan line gets me closest, so I need to switch over at our next 
stop, which would be Wembley Park.

Funny, that's what the guys in Worldwide Support said.  Fortunately the 
repair tool seems to have undone the deletion of the supervisor 
account. :)

NetWare server.  There's an account even on current versions that's a 
throwback to the versions from the early 90's.  It's a hard-coded account 
that normally can't be deleted, but the tool I was using (an internal 
support tool) can whack anything out of the database.

Thing is, when using the internal tool, CTRL-U removes the entry in the 
database that you're looking at, and it reverts to what's called the 
"Entry ID" or "EID" with the lowest value:  The SUPERVISOR account 
(EID=1).

The tool does have a prompt to "press any key to continue", but it  
accepts CTRL-U as one of the "any keys".

So if you end up pressing CTRL-U and it repeats for some reason, you end 
up whacking SUPERVISOR.

It's not used for anything important any more, but it still was a 
surprise.  I was even more surprised that the database repair tool fixed 
it (I didn't think it would do that).

Major oops. ;-)

Not that I couldn't have recreated it by hand (being trained on the 
database editor has its uses), but the system fixed it on its own, much 
to my surprise.

As long as we've got separate rooms. ;-)

All the talk about fish & chips means now I'm hungry; our local chip shop 
was called "Picadilly Fish & Chips", so I think heading up the District 
line to the Picadilly line is a good option, so let's head to Earl's 
Court to switch lines.
