This morning, a very friendly lady stuck a cookie cutter in my arm and 
aspirated 200 ml of my fresh, warm blood. o_O

I was ordered to not eat anything for several hours before. That's why 
my stomach was so upset. My arm now has a large chunk missing out of it, 
which is why that hurts. And every time I move it, I get this stabbing 
pain that reminds me of when she put the needle in... which is just... 
gross! >_<

I especially liked the look of *glee* on her face when she found a 
large, juice vein. o_O

Still, I guess it could be worse... Jamie was just telling me about that 
time she dumped 9 lb 2 oz of screaming, kicking baby out of her tail. 
I'll bet *that* stings the next morning! ;_;

As with systems administrators, Don't piss off the nurse ;) They'll get 
the big needle instead.

When it comes to drawing blood I'm a fainter. I've learned to look away 
and distract myself somehow. Which doesn't always work.

Yep. We have one of these workplace checkups coming up, and they want 
fasting results. I dunno why I bother, despite my weight my cholesterol 
is nearly immeasurably low, blood sugar is in the exact right place, etc 
...

Heh. That's a rather big baby! Yeah, that probably had to hurt a little. 
Not as much as a C-Section, which my wife had. Oh, yeah, and I got to 
see as they pulled him out. o_O

The nurse was actually quite friendly, but... well the doctor did want 
blood out of me. No matter how sweetly they smile at you, you're still 
getting stabbed in the arm! :-S

I just closed my eyes and tried to relax. It stings like crazy when they 
put it in. Didn't feel the aspiration process much, but it hurt like a 
bitch when it went in. And taking it out wasn't so hot. The major thing 
though is that now every time I move my arm, I get a sharp pain going 
deep into the tissue. :-S

True fact: If you look up any medical condition on Wikipedia, I can 
almost guarantee at least some of the symptoms will have you going 
"yeah, I sometimes get that..."

Like, I eat huge amounts of sugary food. Maybe I'm diabetic?

(No, wait... I drink almost nothing, I hardly pee, and I rarely feel 
particularly hungry.)

Nah. I think she was just glad to not have to play "let's find a usable 
vein" for 20 minutes...

As an aside, my dad sometimes works with blood samples. Do you have any 
idea how much **** there is floating in some of them?! The really fun 
ones are where you have to scrape through an inch of solid cow lard to 
get to the liquid blood underneith! :-S

Alice's daughter was rather late. 11 lb 6 oz. Born naturally. 
(EVENTUALLY! It took her all day to do it though...)

Jamie's first-born was delivered by emergency C-section. As in, she was 
put into labour (early) and baby's heartbeat went through the floor, so 
they whisked her away and a few minutes later there was a very sickly 
little baby.

Jamie's second was born naturally, but... well Jamie is only a lil girl. 
Apparently there was rather a lot of ripping involved. o_O

Me too, I faint quite easily anyway and just the thought of my blood coming 
out starts to make me feel ill.  I tried giving blood once, but about 75% of 
the way through the machine started beeping for some reason and then I 
fainted.

The worst for me is after an operation, they leave that stupid tap thing on 
the back of your hand for ages afterwards, I presume just incase they need 
to quickly give you something.  Every time I looked at it or thought about 
that thing being attached to my hand I felt ill!

I generally focus on a point on the wall in the opposite direction of 
the arm they're about to stab.

Oh, yeah... My mom is actually diabetic, so I tend to be alert to 
whether I'm drinking too much during the day, needing to get up at 
night, things like that.

Ah, they almost always have to do that with me. Once they wanted to do a 
blood test because I kept getting ear infections, but they couldn't find 
a vein. They kept poking around... >.< eventually they got the "expert" 
and managed to get it on their first try.

to be in the room while they did the operation.

Yep, donated once. Never again. heh. What was worse was they had run the 
line to the pouch down my arm. The warm feeling of the line was 
unnerving. That was about the time that everything got kind of dark.

Heh. Injections aren't *so* bad. (They usually inject into, say, your 
shoulder muscle, which isn't especially tender. And they USE A FRIGGIN 
SMALLER NEEDLE!)

Still, I do recall when me and my sister visited my mum in hospital 
once. I don't know why we bothered... she was so stoned she didn't know 
who we were anyway. They gave her this button that when you press it, 
more morphine goes into your arm. She had her finger permanently 
pressing down on the button, so the point that her fingers went white. 
(Presumably the computer limits the maximum dose though?)

Anyway, while we're standing there, a nurse comes along and changes the 
drip. My sister looked at me as if she was *actually* going to puke. 
Seriously, I didn't know people could turn that colour. o_O

Heh, sure. This nurse is the same one who did my ECG a few weeks ago. 
She's quite friendly and chatty.

My dad did clinical trials. (I.e., they inject you with random chemicals 
to see what happens - if anything.) His arm is like a pin cushion! 
There's so much scare tissue they have to use the other arm now... (He's 
also a blood donor. Or he was - not sure if he still is.)

My mum always ends up getting multiply stabbed while they try to find 
something vein-like. I guess because of the 6 inches of blubber under 
her skin? :-P

Well... animal fat of some description. My dad says it's worst when it's 
the morning sample, and the person has just had a full English 
breakfast. ;-)

I don't know, but yeah, that's FRICKIN' HUGE! She wanted a home birth - 
and indeed, *had* one - but she had so much difficulty ejecting the 
thing they nearly had to take her to hospital.

It was a girl as well...
