OMG, Abe's Oddessy and Abe's Exodus are on Steam now! Now awesome is
that?! :-D (And it's quite cheap. Well I guess it is pretty old now.)
Guess what I'll be spending the next few weeks doing...
[I have actually completed Oddessy before, but I didn't save enough
people, so I got the lame ending. I wasn't actually aware that Exodus
was available for PC.]
Very rich audio-visual experience, this. And definitely lives up to the
"odd world" name!

I remember Shay. In fact, I distinctly remember thinking just the other
day "hmm, I don't remember hearing anything from him recently".
Maybe I'm just not very observant...
"Hello."
"Hello."
"Follow me."
"OK."
"Wait."

Yeah, been spending every spare second hacking away at POV-Ray.
On the subject of old business, you posted a song while back - something
Zelda-ish. I lost my copy. Do you have it online somewhere?

Not knowing what "Zelda" means is rather unforgivable for a gaming nerd,
given that, for example, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is generally
considered one of the best games ever (and most later Zelda games do not
rank very low in overall top lists either).

Good thing I'm not a gaming nerd then, eh? ;-)
Gaming is _not_ my area of expertise. I never claimed it was. Ask me
what the difference between a deterministic and a nondeterministic
Turing machine is and I can tell you. Ask me what the name of that
racing game I saw my sister playing on her PS3 last weekend is and I
wouldn't have a clue...

I have several tracks uploaded, I'm just trying to figure out which one

(I have two recordings which are of actual computer games - but I'm

Ok, trivia question: What's the name of this character:

And just so you know: If you'd ordered yesterday, you could have "every
game id software has ever released" for $34. (Instad of about $300,
which is what you'll now have to pay since the special offer is over.)
I was vaguely tempted, but I figured I've already *got* Quake 2 and
Doom, so why bother?

I love games like Flashback and Oddessy. Back then, it must have been
quite some task to produce games like this. Today it would seem quite
easy. So I wonder... why is nobody doing this?
(Oddessy is graphically rich, but the very low resolution is quite
annoying. Also the sound is quite grainy too. Which is a shame really.
They thought up such wonderful environments, it's a pitty you can't see
and hear them in crisp, clear detail.)

I've got it for the PS1, was actually replaying it only last month. I tend
to get to that bit where you have a choice of multiple doors in the temple
then start tearing my hair out. It's the save points that mess me up, heh
I recall one point where you needed a mount to cross, but I'd got to a
save point and switched off. Came back to that save point sans mount and
had to hop back over the jumps to fetch it again.

Amusingly, the PC version still has things like "press X to continue" in
it. ;-)
I spent an hour or so completing one of those puzzles, and then the game
crashed. I was NOT happy! In all, the game seems a little bit glitchy.
My sound card probably doesn't help. It's an expensive low-latency
model. But it also takes a split second to initialise before it will
play any sound. And Oddessy seems to initialise it only when it wants to
play some sound. This generally results in most of the sound not
playing. (Windoze has the same issue.)

Heh a PS port to a PC how rare is that?

Haven't had it crash*, more robust with fixed hardware obviously, but I
know that frustration to get across a level only to be gunned down by a
squig on a platform in the background; though it is fun to possess them
and run them off high ledges.
Trouble is for me I think of it as a pre-cog game, you have to know what's
on the other side of the flick screen before you enter it. I mean if you
walk everywhere you get a split-second of reaction when the screen flicks,
but it means your default manner is - walk to edge of screen, step over
the flick, glance at everything, step back to flick, repeat until you can
see what to do. Then that gets messed with when you're running away from
something, seriously though I bet that opening sequence put of so many
people - run, run, now jump up, oops too late you ran into the wall/ oops
too soon you didn't catch the ledge/ oops you didn't pull yourself up in
time. ;-)

Probably a bit of legacy PS coding, how do you cope with the whistle codes
then?
*Interestingly since the latest PS3 update that allows you to access the
OS menu while playing a game Oblivion has been freezing up more on
autosave/relocation loads.

I just like making them shoot each other and stuff. Because I'm like
that... (And also shooting their slogs. Heh.)

Yeah, that can be annoying. (Usually the fireflies warn you - but not
always.)

Not sure which part you mean.
The paramite's nest is fun though. It's basically an assult course -
with flesh-eating paramites! And they're all spaced so that you have
enough time to out-run them. (But only just!) Took me a while to
complete that, but it was fun.
(Well, except for the controls. Arrow keys to move, shift to run, space
to jump... and ENTER to roll??)

If there's some background music playing it's fine. It's only when *all*
sound stops that it deallocates the sound hardware. Silly really...

Damnit you need a console, get a PS3 and The Orange Box and we can go
TF2ing together :-P Bioshock and Fallout3 will be out soon and the GOTY
edition of Oblivion has been out for a while. No need to worry about
system specs, or making sure your anti-virus programme doesn't suddenly
decide to do a system scan while you're playing (hey and no viruses
either), little need to worry about file corruption, 5-10 second boot up
to menu, HD output and a blu-ray player... and you can install Linux on it
if you want. Install Yellow Dog Linux and you get the Cell SDK for writing
your own games.
> (Or for PC, actually.)
Heck I'm almost solely into PS3 now and I still know what's being released
on the PC and the 360.

The opening sequence. Almost old school in the expectations that you have
read the manual and thus have no real requirement for a control tutorial.

The opening sequence is pretty damned easy, and the signs walk you

So unusable my 6 year old cousin can play a game with it despite it being
too large for his hands. Ah come on One Of Us, Join Us, Forsake the Mouse
and pick up the Joypad.

Ever again mwhahahaha; actually I tell a lie you need to have enough HD
space to install the game. Of course you can just pop the drive and
install a larger capacity one if it does get full. Heck it'll even talk to
WMP11 so you can dump your photos on the PC and then play them back on the
TV.

Ah that depends on the game, hmm wandering through YouTube I see Rainbow
Six Vega 2 has a load time of 45 seconds from start to menu and letting
all the adverts play.

Ah but do you have a 40" widescreen LCD monitor? :-)

There's been a few things released, Amazon lists 1,945 results for Blu-ray
though that includes a lot of pre-release stuff so let's say about 1,000
films. They're still too damn expensive at the moment compared to DVD
though, even the 'old' ones have only dropped to the same price as the
original DVD price whereas the DVD drops to half+ its price.

Yeah after Exoddus they switched over to XBox odd they didn't release it
for Windows too given the similarity in platforms.

Any gamepad is unusable for playing FPS games. Gamepads and FPS just
don't mix. It's a horrid idea to begin with.
Yes, I *do* have personal experience of this.

No. My bedroom is significantly too small to fit one. :-P
My sister has one though. I find that having the screen so far away
means you can't see the detail quite so well. It *does* look impressive
though. Mind you, Benny has a 25" LCD that looks pretty amazing. He
claims it's 1900x1600 or something absurd...

Exclusivity contract, much? ;-)

Not in the PC version.

Given that I have been using 1600x1200 for something like 5 years, that
doesn't sound so absurd.

Yeah, but LCD monitors usually only go up to 1024x768, or maybe
1280x1024 if it's expensive.
It looked impressively sharp though. CRT has the advantage that it works
properly at *every* resolution, but I think LCD has now reached the
point where it actually looks sharper. I'm thinking about getting myself
an LCD at some point. However... having just spent a whole heap of
money, I guess it won't be any time soon...! o_O

All decent 24" Wide-LCD's have native resolution of 1920x1200 (which,
with 60Hz refresh rate, has lower pixel clock than 1600x1200@85hz).
Heck, even all decent 22" Wide-LCD's have native resolution of 1680x1050.
Personally, I'd miss 4:3 -monitor if I was forced out of CRT on my
desktop. LCD's, especially wide ones, take an incredible amount of
desk-space with proper resolutions, when 19" CRT can take 1600x1200 easily.

I'll remember that if you ever post how much Wii Sports is tiring you out
:-P
Okay taking Warp's view into account I'd be the first to agree that the
mouse is a better aiming mechanism for FPS games and it's really annoying
that despite the fact the PS3 supports both USB mice and keyboards very
few (as in only one) games seems to support them.
As for usability sure if you're trying to do a long range snipe of
someone's head tweaking the sticks is annoying, likewise 180 degree
rotations, but for the most part you do get used to the sticks.

How about a 32"? Of course it should be hooked up to the main television
so everyone can join in.

That does make me laugh - look at all the detail my 1080p screen picks up,
oh but you have to sit further away from it.

Yep must have tied themselves to Microsoft :-P

Hmm I recall "Run Abe Run" a flick screen and a wall you have to clamber
up with a squig following you.

My hands can't withstand the G-forces. o_O

I'd imagine for spinning round on the spot, the sticks are probably
easier. (I constantly run out of desk space. Do you have ANY IDEA how
much stuff is in my bedroom?) But playing CoD4 it was just impossible to
hit anything. :-S

In the PC version, the game starts, and you casually walk around until
the first ledge. As soon as you haul yourself up it, a Slig rushes in.
But by then you're out of the way. So unless you climb back down again,
you're really in no danger. (The Slig, however, is liable to get
possessed and blown up. Muhuhuhuh!)

No, so much so that some games have a dedicated 180-turn button though 90°
movement can be quite quick. As I say it's the fiddly stuff that you wish
you had a mouse for. I might go so far to say that you shouldn't play
console FPS games the same way you play PC FPS games. Rather then jump out
of hiding and sweep your sights over the enemy bam bam; you need to adjust
to the fact that you're not quite as nimble and thus slow down a bit.

I can well imagine it being taken up by large amounts of musical equipment.

Ah yes just for fun here's a comparision video of CoD4 on PS3 and 360 -
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/27571.html oh and because you probably
haven't seen it http://www.gametrailers.com/player/38636.html currently a
PS3 exclusive.

Hmm I'm sure I got shot there.
