Heh... Who got the latest win update and could'nt get online yesterday? I
bet it was just me here. :(
http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/media-alert-check-point-provides/story.aspx?guid=%7BFC6B94E2-0979-4173-92BF-9AF2C9F677D5%7D&dist=hppr
Apparently, ZoneAlarm and winUpdate didn't see eye-to-eye this time around
which resulted in not being able to access the internet. Yep, true.
The thing is, I spent countless hours trying to fix it, falling short of
ringing my ISP's (Tiscali) helpline in India. Heh. :)
I messed with the settings for aaaaaggggeeesss! I messed with everything!
(You know, it took a day+). ;)
And then I thought: What happened/what did I do when I couldn't access the
'net? "Oh yeah, I installed that MS update"
Heck, I just looked at it in "Add and Remove Programs" and clicked it the
hell out of there... And then, all of a sudden, I had the **'NET** back! :)
Anyway, the recommendation is to install the latest versions of ZA and
AVG. (And it works).
But, truly, I lost a day there. :(
Who do I bill for that?

BTW, I feel proud that I found the answer myself, (just to get back online),
before I found the answer when I did get back online...
Hmm @ that...

The latest security update definitly caused 'issues'. There were lots of
mentions of it on the SQL boards though I didn't read the details. Also saw
a query about it on the mvp newsgroups.
I think I'll wait a couple days to see how things fall out before I install.

Yes, I was actually quite surprised that I found the answer so quickly
on Google. I think a lot of people probably fell into the same trap with
their machine's setups, much like myself.

Well, it's not the win update Gail, that's ok, it's the relationship with
ZA - something hasn't quite married properly this time around program-wise.

Yeah, but the update's doing something to SQL Server too, and that I have a
big issue with. With a mini-presentation tomorrow and 2 biggish conference
presentations in 3 weeks, I can't afford a broken laptop right now.

Actually, my younger brother in Japan said he was having troubles
intermittantly.....Hmmm, I wonder if he applied this update.

Ah, I see! Sorry about that Gail, really. I hope you do ok, (as I'm sure
you will).
Best,

It'll be fine. I'm usually a couple days behind on updates anyway. I'll
install it once I have some confirmation on what it's actually doing.

Yeah, kind of sounds like it Jim if he's using ZA too. But, it shouldn't be
intermittant, he just won't get online. I mean, he'll be able to 'connect'
to his ISP, (my experience), but he won't render one single web page or
download any emails. Very frustrating, and it was like: "I trust winupdate",
and hence me looking for other solutions. Lesson learnt. ;)

:-)
I've asked him if that's a possibility, so we'll see. Thanks for
pointing this one out, though - I never would have found it otherwise.
