It's mainly about my master thesis for a start. I'm working on a master
thesis on "Adaptive Animation for Character Locomotion" and I'll be using
the blog to document and keep track on my own progress and share my thoughts
and results. Basically I'm working on a technology to make walking and
running characters in computer games look more realistic.

I was surprised that Blogger.com would let me have the blog on my own site
and with my completely own design without requiring any components installed
on my server. It's all handled by Blogger and simply transferred per FTP to
my host as static html pages whenever something changes. Sure it may seem
like old technology, but so far it seems to work fine. Blogger's interface
is exposed when people actually want to comment, but I don't mind that.

Ah just wait, soon it'll morph into you telling us what you're currently
listening to and what you had for breakfast ;-)

Well it is Google, they seem to be quite good at doing that sort of thing.

Got your RSS feed added to my collection :)

I'm curious, though... why Blogger and not WordPress?

I don't know a lot about either... I used WordPress for a group project a
year ago and I just remember thinking that the WYSIWYG interface for posting
was horrible and broken. This doesn't seem to be the case as much with
Blogger, but then, I haven't tried much other than plain text yet.

Anyway, do WordPress allow this "publish via FTP" thing? And what do you
think are the advantages of WordPress over Blogger?

I don't know about FTP, but you can publish via email, although it won't allow
you to select a category.

I like running the WP code from my server (I'm a control freak like that), there
are a large number of themes (and all of them customizable... is that even a
word??), and there are some nice plugins to keep track of stats, spam
protection, blah blah blah. Blogger also has a horrible reputation for being a
spammer's haven.

I don't know... WordPress is not perfect, and I know there are other blog
software packages out there that are comparable, maybe even better. I just
like having a few gazillion themes to choose from so I don't have to hurt my
few and far-between brain cells designing yet another website. And you can't
argue with the price ;)

Not that you were asking me, but... I use WordPress because it's what my
host provides. (It comes free with the package.) It works, but the
thingy for composing posts is disgustingly buggy. In general, WP doesn't
seem terribly stable. Oh, and my hosts have kindly disabled most of the
customisibility features.

Of course, if I were to pay them 3x my current fees, I could run
arbitrary CGI. If I then manually install WP by myself [presumably a
very non-trivial task] I would then be able to customise it all I want.

Or try something better...

I haven't had any issues with the interface -- yet -- on my WordPress, but the
one they run on Animationblogspot.com sometimes makes me want to put my fist
thru my monitor. Which is bad, because broken glass hurts and then I have no
monitor...

It's always about trying something better ;)

The biggest advantage I've seen is that WP includes a UI for statistics
information on the blog. Probably not as important for you since you're
doing the "publish via ftp" (which I didn't know blogger had), but it is
really nice to see how the blog is being accessed.

Same here - I'm wondering what these bugs/issues are that I've not seen
them.

Go post a comment. Now click "edit". Oh look, a whole bunch of spurious
"<p>" tags have now appeared. Everything is now double-spaced. Neat.

Write a post. Post it. Now go back and edit it. Oh look, all my markup
has been chewed up. (Certain tags get eaten!)

And so on...
