Has anybody here played either Far Cry or Crysis?

Are they any good? Would you recommend them? Do you need a small Cray to
play them?

Don't know for FarCry, but I think for Crysis, you may need a *big* Cray.
Just out of curiosity, I googled for a demo: 1.7GB!?! Have people gone
totally nuts?

I've played Far Cry; it's fun, but *extremely* difficult. Especially
considering they don't let you save anywhere by default (you have to
hack it to let you).

I tried the demo for Crysis, but a large portion of the game utilizes
the middle mouse button. Not the wheel; you have to press the button
and drag. Unfortunately, my mouse didn't work with that, so I was
unable to perform those actions >95% of the time. And there's no way to
remap it (that I could find).

Add to that the fact that I had the graphics settings rather low, and it
still ran like a snail, and a review I read recently which stated that
some of the later levels run only 1/4 the speed of the earlier ones, and
you start to realize just how much you need that Cray...

Yes, but only if you try to run it on medium to high settings on a mid
spec machine (like mine), It'll drag then, but on low settings it's fine,
and looks pretty good too.

FarCry, Crysis - great games! :)

I only have a lowly 2.2 GHz dual-core AMD Athlon X2 4200+ with 3 GB
DDR-400 RAM and an nVidia GeForce 7900GTX 512 MB. It'll probably not run
at all...

BTW, I'm a little confused here. Benny seems to think that DirectX 10 is
available for WinXP, while I was under the impression that it's for
Vista only. [Part of of the M$ plan to force everybody to upgrade.]
However, Wikipedia at least seems to suggest that Crysis works on XP,
despite using DirectX 10... so... er... wuh?

I wish I had that! :( It'll probably run fine on high with those specs,
and if it doesn't, medium settings will probably get you 35-45 FPS, which is
damn fast.

    Here's my system:

    XP Home SP2
     AMD Sempron Processor 2800+
     nVidia 6600 GT
     1 Gig RAM

I've been playing Crysis this morning, it really is good. :)

No, DX10 isn't available for XP. What happened was one guy managed to
simply edit a config file so that XP DX9 gives the same 'very high' settings
as DX10. I tried it. Now, that nearly killed my machine! Easy enough to swap
back though, which I did.

If you get Crysis, and want to tweak the config file yourself, here it
is:

DirectX 10 is Vista only because it's a complete rewrite of the entire
system and depends on the complete rewrite of certain parts of the OS
they did for Vista. It just can't work in XP because XP doesn't have
the architecture necessary to run DX10.

Crysis *can* use DX10, but it can also be run on DX9, without the
DX10-specific features (although, as has been demonstrated, many of
the alleged "DX10-specific" features used by the game are actually
supported by DX9 after all).

Right. That makes sense.

...so what you're saying is, Crysis can use DirectX 9 or DirectX 10,
whichever is available. (?)

Far cry was fun. Very difficult, but fun. My rather old machine handled it

Yes. Why is that a surprise?

Granted, I don't know many specifics about the DirectX API, but AFAIK
it has been designed to be quite flexible so that programs can actually
ask the API if some feature is supported (by hardware or at all) or not,
and act accordingly.

No, I'm just checking I understand correctly.

(Obviously the "simplest" thing to do would be to assume one level of
DirectX and fail if any other level is present. It also seems likely
that it wouldn't be that hard to check and use until available features
- I was just checking whether that is what they actually did.)

Far Cry has excellent graphics considering when it came out and the systems
it will run on. And quite difficult as well...

I tried the demo for Crysis on my few-months-old quad core 2, 3 GB RAM,
GeForce 7350 LE...average FPS: around 1. Maximum FPS: 4. Can we say
"if you want to play Crysis, get a decent graphics card"?

Wow. o_O

So I guess this is going to have to wait another 5 years or so until I

Hmm. Almost everybody has commented that "it's very hard". Given that I
*still* haven't completed HL2:EP2 yet because it's too hard, perhaps
getting this game would just be a waste of time...

I'm not often. I sometimes use them to blow off stream (metaphorically, of
course)

I found a second hand copy at a computer shop in Randburg. R60. For that...

    <sigh>

Just download the demo and try it - it's free. The demo is the first
mission, it's good, and if you can run that, you can run the rest with your
system.

     Last word on this.

Well, I have Vista, but the graphics cards on prebuilt systems (HP
Pavilion) are usually low-end even if everything else is
top-of-the-line. 'Course, this comp. also came with a video capture
card, and that works fine...actually there aren't many things that
really need good graphics cards. I don't use Aero, so it's even less of
an issue.

Hmmm, the Pavilion I have has a 6150LE in it; I don't know if that's high-
end or not; the system came with Vista Home on it (ugh), but I didn't try
any of the Aero effects out. With OpenSUSE 10.3, though, I get excellent
performance out of the card for XGL effects as well as regular OpenGL
programs.

6xxx -> GeForce 6 series. (Current = 8 series.)

x150 -> low number -> low-end. (Compared to other 6 series models. Can't
easily compare between different series.)

LE -> Light Edition -> lower-end.

(OTOH, endings like GT or GTX mean "suped up".)

Interesting. The new Dell laptops we have at work come with... an nVidia
Quadro graphics card. (Yes, those are the ones that cost £2k each.) Hmm...

It's not that hard. Destroy the hunters, then the strider, save.
Go to the next strider and repeat. If you die, continue from the savepoint.
Repeat until you have killed them all. (You should keep a "backup" save
of the the beginning of the situation just in case you save in the wrong
place and can't continue from there.)

It's the "destroy the hunters" part that I can't pull off. They're
almost indestructible. I mean, I managed to kill one of them, but now I
have almost no ammo left at all. I used all of it to kill just one hunter!

That's all good advice... If only I always followed it! :-S

After beating it, I learned that hunters have a vulnerability to
automobile tires moving at around 45mph / 72kph.

First time through, I spent all the shotgun ammo on the first few
hunters, then switched between the crossbow and any grenade/rocket on
hand. That took more saves and restarts then I care to admit.

Yeah - good luck hitting them though. It's almost impossible to drive
that vehicle! I mean, it's difficult to hit the *road*, never mind a
bunch of nimble-footed metal cylopses...

I guess that's what it comes down to. The only way I'm going to complete
this thing is by spending several very boring days playing and replaying
the same 4 minutes of gameplay until I get lucky. *sigh*

If you'll get bored, what's the point in playing? The idea of games is
to have fun, isn't it?

Ah, OK - I knew there probably was a method to the scheme used for
numbering. So probably a bad idea to play with Aero on it. Good thing I
run Linux. :-)

Three guesses why I haven't done this part yet...

[I do, however, want to see how it ends.]

To see the end. (Which, in this case, is rather interesting.)

Wait... The hunters in 2 don't have the vulnerability where you can
shoot them in the back to kill them? Useful when you have sniper rifle.
;) But seriously, at least in Halo 1, they have *no* armor at all in the
lower back, where you can see a patch of orange, sort of V shaped. Mind
you, haven't played 2, since a) I don't have an XBox and b) I don't have
fracking Vista. :p

Half-life 2 != Halo 2.

Isn't that what God mode is for? This *is* a PC you're talking about, right?

Depends on what your goal is. If the goal is to see the story, it's
perfectly acceptable. I suck at games that involve any sort of
coordination (video or otherwise), but if I want to "read the story", the
only way for me to do that is to put the game in God mode.

You might want to try books instead. Easier to read. Better stories.

While true, cheating at a solitary (single-player) game and admitting it
doesn't seem to have any dishonor to me. Now, if you bragged you beat it
and didn't mention you cheated, that's different.

Is God mode more or less cheating than asking people online how to get
past the problem area? :-)

Having read the first Myst novel, I'm willing to assert the game was
better. ;-)

Thanks; I do read, but I also like other forms of entertainment as well.
I don't need to be lectured by someone who doesn't know me about what is
and isn't entertaining.

So we're supposed to be excluded from an entire medium of story telling,
just because we're not l337 hax0r 13yo's, but instead we have real jobs
(not to mention, other hobbies)?

There's nothing wrong with wanting to play through a game for fun,
rather than for bragging rights (haha, I beat Doom 14 on "Final
Nightmare Elite" mode in 31 hours, w/o taking a potty break!). After
all, it IS a "game".

If the game lets you do it, it's not really cheating :)
