ok, after getting fed up with either the news.povray.org web interface or
our proxy, I got to finally try out some newsgroups clients.

At home I installed Mozilla Thunderbird and it's fine enough for the task.
Here at work, I tried to install it, but our admins blocked downloads
of executables. That's ok, because I discovered it was still possible to
install it by ftp, they seemingly were only aware of how to block http
requests. Today, though, I sadly found out that they now blocked ftp as
well, so I felt out of options. except...

except that I have the hateful Lotus Notes here. Hate it, but found out
that it does newsgroups as well. Well, here I am! does it look good to
you?
if not, say it that I'll drop the damned thing altogether... :D

Looks good enough, but you're posting in HTML. See if you can find a way
to post in plain text only.

*Any* newsreader will be better (and a *lot* faster) than any web
interface :)

Those darned admins. At my job, they block the NNTP protocol, so I
can't read ng with anything other than the web interface :(

Have you tryed "cheating"?
Request an executable, but ask to save it as, say, a JPG, or DOC, or PPS file,
or some other extention...
Or, from home, upload it on any file sharing site, but with some custom
extention. You then retreive it from your work computer. Once you have it, just
rename with the correct extention.

They want you to work at work. ;)
No, I'm not an admin. Don't attack me. ^^

except so far I've been enable to get Notes to cite messages and it
searches the entire (limited to 1000 messages) catalog everytime I click
on a "folder"... :/

I'm not sure, if they block any connection, but couldn't you use thunderbird
portable on a usb-drive or something like that?
It is legible, so it's also ok this way.

No, because it's posting both text and HTML. <barf>

http://www.nocrew.org/software/httptunnel.html

I've used this myself when I absolutely needed the ability to use NNTP
and the port was blocked.

executables are blocked in the proxy server. You don't get a chance to
save as anything, all you get is a standard blocked screen or
time out in the case of ftp. I actually downloaded the Windows version of
Thunderbird yesterday and zipped with the same name plus zip sufix.
Well, it turns out that Gmail identified it as Mime type application/zip
and the proxy either got that or simply scanned the whole name for exe and
found it.

How dumb am I getting or are the admins getting too smart? :P

I'm quite sure this Lotus newsgroups thing won't last much.. BTW, I think
I succeeded in turning messages to text only. is that right?
