Well, don't be discouraged by it - not everyone's going to hire you.
After writing my first book, I interviewed for a position at Iomega.
Even gave them a copy of the book, and blew away the technical interview.
They still didn't ask me back; I didn't have the right letters after my
name; I held no certifications at all at the time, and they wanted to see
that. At the time I was one of about 35 people answering questions on
CompuServe for Novell, which ought to have been enough. Getting the cert
wasn't easy - but not terribly difficult either, whereas being invited to
that rather elite group was on a peer recommendation basis, and they/we
were VERY hard to impress.
Unfortunately for Iomega, my experience counted little for anything
compared to the letters after my name. <shrug> Their loss.

Yeah, sure. I was fairly sure I wouldn't get the job in the first place.
I just thought I'd give it a go... ;-)

I always considered an interview as a two-way street. They were
interviewing me, but I was also interviewing them. If I didn't like what
I heard, I'd turn the job down (and have a couple of times).

Hmm... perhaps this is why I have never accomplished anything in my
entire life?

IMO, the best approach is not to worry about pleasing other people or
about what other people think. Just be yourself.
I'm in charge of a somewhat large number of external instructors in my
job; if I spent all my time trying to please them all, I'd never get any
work done at all. So I make my decisions based on my perception of
what's best for the majority of the group overall. Some of them don't
like it, because they don't get special treatment that they used to get.
Usually that's enough, but I've got a few who insist they be treated
differently. That's too bad, because I'm not making exceptions for
friends of mine, so why should I make exceptions for someone who says
they should get one?
Overall, the group (several hundred members) has appreciated what I've
done. The subset that are unhappy with me are a small minority, but they
can be very vocal.

Naturally, I'm thinking about somebody *else*.
