Hi
I'm testing a new way to show images in full size for my gallery on my
website. It uses JavaScript, but to my understanding, JavaScript is so
widely used now that virtually noone have it turned off (or else there would
be tons of sites they couldn't use). Anyway, it has an acceptable fallback
behaviour.
I'd appreciate if you would test it and let me know what you think about it:
http://runevision.com/3d/3dgallery1/zoomtest.html (only implemented on that
particular page)
The current (old) behaviour can be seen here for comparison:
http://runevision.com/3d/3dgallery1/
Which do you prefer?
The JavaScript is derived from the code at the XaoS gallery:
http://wmi.math.u-szeged.hu/xaos/doku.php?id=galleries:main
...which is powered by DokuWiki, which is licensed under the GPL, so it
should be ok to use it.

Yeah, that's kinda neat.
I guess the only disadvantage is that you can't easily use tabbed
browsing with it. But that doesn't appear to be a big issue.

I think that you are too honest. I've never heard of the IT guru who did not
have good equipment. I'm sure that there must be a reason to replace your
monitor or a need for a *hot spare*.

Just repeatedly drop it on the floor one morning from progressively higher
starting points until it doesn't work. Then order a shiny new 24" LCD ;-)

Or turn the brightness down from the inside.
I used to do that in the old days with oscilloscopes, turn down the brightness
and remove the power light. It was a trade test to see how long it would take
the victim to find the fault.
I did grow up a bit :)

Guru? Heh. Not quite... ;-)
Besides, I want to save all the budget so we can buy *important* things
- like replacing all those 500 MHz PCs for example.

First of all, THANK YOU for being considerate of the viewer in your site design
and not just assuming that everyone is obligated to leave JavaScript switched
on. I’m one of those who generally leave it switched off and turn it on only
when I actually need it to do something on a site I really trust. I understand
your predicament as I have had to use it myself in designs a couple of times in
order to comply with clients’ needs.
The “fallback behavior” is, IMHO, more than adequate. Although I personally
advocate JavaScript-free design where possible, your version with JavaScript is
a well-designed compromise that I would have no cause to complain about. Oh
BTW, nice site generally.
Best Regards,
Mike C.

I understand your point of view but …
Who is the most important person at your site - YOU.
Who will get no respect if they look as if they are working on an Oxfam hand me
down - YOU.
Who is responsible for supplying equipment fit for purpose - THEM.
Get what you can and don't worry about other people's gear unless you are in
charge of the budget. If they need better kit then they should be able to
justify it.
If I were Cute Girl, I wouldn't be seen dead talking to someone who has a
monitor as bad as you describe.
I hope that you don't think that I'm getting at you but this is your first job
and you seem not to know what is expected of you. Personally I think that your
company are taking a loan of you. You are worth more than you are getting.

Um... no, technically it's the people who sit in the lab and actually

Heh. I'm the youngest person here. And I'm a computer nerd. I get no

They don't seem to take that too seriously. [Although in the last few

Benny said something similar. Apparently his son earns more than me by
stacking shelves at Tesco. Oh well...

I always thought the point was to keep people from saving the image
without a lot of work.

It's not feature creep if you put it
at the end and adjust the release date.

Huh? No, only in a few cases I think. With the approach I have, it couldn't
be simpler to save the image. Right clicking on the link to the image works
and right clicking on the image itself does too.

There's your problem (or at least one of them :) you believe that. You are the
most important person to you and you are working to earn your own living and not
just to keep the company going.

You're letting the side down then. And I bet Benny's son has more chance of a
night out than you do.

important, you know.

I have it turned off. NoScript plugin disables Javascript for all pages
except those explicitly on the whitelist. "Virtually nobody has
Javascript turned off, so let's not bother about it" is like saying
"everyone has a lot of CPU and RAM nowadays so why bother optimizing".
> Anyway, it has an acceptable fallback behaviour.
More than acceptable, compared to other sites...
Comments about the zoom itself:
The background would look better as a real transparency; the black/white
1px checker looks ugly. You could leave it as fallback if the browser
doesn't support real transparency, though.
The X button is too small.

I also have it off using NoScript. I only enable it if I *know* there
is something worth seeing (i.e. quite often).

Cool. Might be different code with the same effect. Now that I think of
it, I think the other one I saw was Flash.

The odd thing is that this seems to be supported by the code (it even comes
with a black, 50% transparent image), but for some reason is not used, even
in Firefox. I'll have to investigate further to find out why.
> The X button is too small.
The clickable area is larger than the visible X itself. I don't think I can
make the visible X bigger without making the frame thicker too, and I don't
want that.
Thanks for the comments!

Hm. :( Unfortunately I can't test in IE7 right now, since I have IE6. As
long as more people have IE6 than IE7, I'm going to keep it, and it isn't
possible to have both on the same machine without putting a lot of effort
into it.

The old one. With the new one you can't click X images to open at new
tabs (yes, I do that often, when I'm checking some image gallery: open
them, wait a while and browse the tabs without noticeable delay) and (at
least with Seamonkey) the popup closes when you'll hit the background of
the page (ie. to get wheel-scrolling working).

I can middle-click images and they open in new tabs. Ctrl-leftclicking
opens a tab with the image *and* the popup, though.

Technically, it's the guy who actually sells your services, not the guy

They give me money. Sometimes I don't have to do very much.

Oh! Dear, it was finger trouble on my part. I had been clicking and viewing ok

Darn. So can I, now that you mentioned middle-click :D. Ctrl+left (which
I usually use nowadays, since my laptop has only 2-button toucpad) won't
open new tab for me.
I withdraw my rant.
