Hmmm.. Had a chance to try this recently. The one the store rep cut up
and gave to our group was pretty good. Sweet, a bit like kiwi. I have
since tried to buy one, and each time I get something that is bitter,
and unappetizing. How do I select one that will taste decent?

The fresh ones are those freshly picked from a dragon.
You need a night that can say 'nee' very loud to be able to incapacitate
the dragon long enough to pick the fruit from the dragon.
What you are buying has likely been picked from a dead dragon.
Holy hand grenades may have been used, but nuclear weapons seem to do
the trick as well.
Good luck in getting a good one, they can be hard to find.

I suspect it's a bit like getting fresh mountain oysters.

Sorry I poked fun at your request for information. I thought others
would be able to provide some real info to cover my lack of info.
So, I thought I would do a bit of poking for you.
Some sites that look somewhat promising

I didn't actually read anything on these sites. it's just what google
spit out at me.
Good luck finding some good DF!

I saw one of those. VERY expensive in my area: specialised seasonal import.
