Politicians understand the questions they cunningly non-answer at length. 
This was just being "lost at sea in a small boat".

Well okayyy.  Yeah there WAS Dan Quayle, and now there's GWB in office. 
Maybe I'll concede some points there.  ;-)

Now she is a smart and well spoken person.

I have boys aged 8 and 5.  They are certainly learning (or will learn) 
the times tables, standard long hand multiplication and long division 
algorithms etc.

You need the basics.
