Hi,
I have just started playing with Moray & POV-Ray and will obviously take a
few hours/days/months to really get anywhere.
I'm an OAP and therefore somethings will take a lot of hammering home for
the old grey cells to realise what is going on.,
However, my first silly question is how can I set up my 'account' with this
group so that I get emails of all the postings instead of having to logon
all the time - just being a 'lurker' and listening should help me no end.
I look forward to enjoying POV-Ray and bothering you all with simple
questions in the future.
Thanks for reading this
Zog

Hi Zog,
I don't know whether it's possible to do what you ask, but I'd recommend
against it, even if it is. IMO it would be far easier to set up a newsgroup
reader such as the one that comes with Outlook Express. This gives you a lot
more control over monitoring conversations (threads), so you can mark a
thread as being of particular interest to you as well as being able to block
any threads that you're getting a little sick of seeing. It automatically
groups together messages under the relevant thread, enabling you to rapidly
go back through and look at the previous messages, which is particularly
useful if the respondent doesn't include the full chain of messages and your
grey cells aren't up to remembering who said what.
By contrast, if you are able to send newsgroup items to your email then it
could make your email a bit difficult to handle, so a popular thread could
generate 20 or 30 responses which could arrive at your email account out of
sequence and potentially interspersed with other emails.
There are step by step instructions on setting up Outlook Express at
http://www.povray.org/resources/newsgroups/oetut.php
If you are concerned about the connection time, you can mark certain
newsgroups for reading offline, which is good to help minimise the time
connected for dialup connections. Search for 'Reading News Offline' on the
OE Tutorial page.
Hope this helps,
Chris B.

Thank you Chris, just what I wanted - I've never used a newsgroup before,
only forums

Good advice from Chris there. One other thing worth noting is that you can
specify whether or not to download the whole message or just the "headers" -
headers just contain the title, who it was by and the date. I use this
setting on newsgroups that have large files attached to them (for example
povray.binaries.animations) - it will only download the whole message if you
click on it which will save you a lot of time by not downloading things
you're not interested in.
Hope this helps a little and a big welcome from another POV newbie :)
Regards,
Simon
