Look here in the introduction that should explain it for you.

http://www.povray.org/documentation/

Short version: It's a raytracer. A program to create 3d scenes that can be
rendered to pictures or annimattions... Prety cool, he

What it is: A perty powerfull ray tracer, as a bonus, it's FREE
What it does: Create 3D still images or animations.
Install it and read thru the tutorials. Do all the scenes you come upon, it will
give you a very good idea of it's basic possibilities. Next thing, is to
experiment to your hearth content.

Also take a look at http://hof.povray.org/ and http://www.irtc.org/ to
see examples of what can be done with it. (hof = hall of fame)
