Have your object have a high ambient value in it's finish and surround it by another,
transparent 
one filled with emissive media. That container should only aproximate your object. If
it's a 
compound object, you need to replace any union with merge to remove internal surfaces,
otherwise, 
they will become visible.
If you use radiosity, it will effectively emit light for whatever surrouds it.
