after i read the comment from the judges on my image for povcomp 2004,
i agread with them when they said my picture was cartoonisch.
but i have no idea to undo this.
if anybody has a few nice tips for me i would like to hear them soon

Congratulations on your entry, it shows a lot of promise.

Giles Tran posted something of a tutorial for POVCOMP

I'm sure a lot of people better qualified than me will offer
advice, but for what it's worth...

Your modelling is very good. It's usually the texturing and
lighting that determine cartoonish/realistic aspects, and I think
your robot's textures could use more realism and variety.

Maybe some parts could have a mirror finish, while others
could be rough and dirty. You could make the pipes clear
with liquid visible inside. You can use procedural layered
textures to get some variety, but free photo textures are
available also.

On the model, the joints might look more realistic if the
body parts didn't simply blend together. Sockets for the
joint balls might help.

The lighting could be improved with area lights for
more realistic shadows, and multiple light sources would
give the objects more dimension. The old standard
primary, backlight, and fill light method is often a good
first cut.

I really like the red "cutout" view of the inside, almost
like seeing the muscles working. A very nice touch!

Note that the "cartoonish" comment was meant positively. Because of it, the
result was pleasant and fresh. There's a good choice of colours too.
