i cannot get a decent render on a starfield created by using an imagemap.
it always looks too pixellated.  the resolution of the image is 2880x1440
and of ver high quality (24 bpp).

Are you rendering with anti-aliasing on? If the stars are smaller than the
size of a pixel, it will help smooth them out. Try +A0.3.
