Take a look at the following image:

......the problem is with the outer layer of the structure (the green
nanotube), which is material{M_NB_Winebottle_Glass}. The pixel level
sparkly dots spoil the glassy look. What I'd like is a look more like the
ruby glass in this:

....of course I've tried changing to the ruby glass, and indeed changing all
the settings in the material, but it seems it's not the glass color or
basic properties that are to blame, but rather the complexity of the image
behind. I can't seem to fix it except by going for an ior near to 1.0 - at
which point it ain't glass no more!
I can just give up on the idea of having the outer tube as glass, and
instead go for a dark metal, but I thought I'd post to see if anyone has a
solution.

Are you using antialiasing in the first image ? If not, that might be a
solution to get rid of the sparks.

You may need a larger max_trace_level and/or increase adc_bailout.
Changing the fade_distance to a lower value may also help, but overdoing
it can make your glass opaque.

Are you using antialiasing? Which version of POV-Ray are you using?
The current version of POV-Ray has a small problem with antialiasing.
Try rendering with POV-Ray 3.5 (with antialiasing, of course) to see
what happens.

he could in fact make the glass opaque. It will still look hard and shiney
and maybe that is enough.

I'm wondering if in fact they aren't sparkly bits, but the gold texture
on the inside structure reflecting through. I'd bet that if you change
the sphere in the middle of the N@C60 image, the dots in the ruby glass
would change color.

Oxonian is my buddy. Yes, we work with these materials and they are very
