i installed 3.6 - sorry i guess i didn't make that clear - when you instal
3.6 (i've never installed POV before) megapov .7 is there along with the
regular pov executable in the bin folder

nowhere is there a file named "readme" even though megapov .7 says to read
the "readme" about how to properly instal pov - and in spite of the fact
that pov 3.6 has been installed correctly, including the home entry in the
registry

i did go get megapov 1.0 and it was only then that i found a file named
"readme" - it was of little use since pov 3.6 was correctly installed in
the first place

thinking that perhaps megapov .7 didn't know about pov version 3.6, i
swapped its executable for that of 1.0 - that didn't work either - the only
thing i have not done is to directly check the registry but have instead
taken the installers' log at its word - messing about in the registry is
beyond my skill level

pov 3.6 runs just fine but i was hoping for something a little less like
programming - i am of a more artistic temperment and i do better when there
is a little 'padding' between me and the machine

thanks

What exactly did you not understand about ABX, myself and the MegaPOV
download page telling you that an official POV-Ray 3.5 installation is
required for MegaPOV 1.0?

Well, you were already told *twice* that you are supposed to install POV-Ray
3.5, *not* POV-Ray 3.6. If you don't read the replies you get, nobody will
be able to help you!

i have, inbetween posts, already tried that and had no luck, i got the exact
same results

i am sorry if i appear to be short or rude - it is certainly not my
intention - if i am being percieved as being rude please accept my appology
- i am only trying to give the straight facts and perhaps that effort has
contributed to a misperception? i really and truly have tried my best to
describe my problem to the best of my ability - i have read each reply and
tried to figure out what it is i need to do to get megapov to work - i
can't firgure it out - can anyone help please?

thank you

Okay, I'll step in where I might be useful. Perhaps a miracle can happen--
or not.
:-)
Could you go into your actual system registry file to get an actual look at
it? As long as you don't edit anything you'd be safe enough to do so (run
Regedit). That could put this "home registry" thing to rest. Should be (I
don't know about Windows 2000, XP here):

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\POV-Ray

There should be a v3.5 folder there and within that is a Windows folder
containing the Home keyword. If its data says the correct path to your
installation then all that should be required of that MegaPOV 1.0 executable
is for it to be located in the POV3.5\bin subfolder on your disk drive.

When MegaPOV or 3.5 is used the key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\POV-Ray\CurrentVersion\Windows

will contain a VersionNo keyword showing which is being, or had been, used.

It really ought to be that simple, even though it has been a long time since
I've used MP. I think that's why people are wondering why it wouldn't be
going as easily for you. It sounds like you are going about it in a more
complex way than need be, with your wanting to run programs securely.
Would certainly help matters if someone else using W2K could help you verify
your procedure and setup. I just think there isn't anything more to it than
already said, though, because I don't even recall any "installer" for MP1.0.

Okay, I just had to get another look at MP1.0 again so I went and got the
zip and all it has is several folders that contain what should be copied to
their respective destination places. Maybe you overwrote the original 3.5
bin folder, as well as the others? All you need is megapov.exe in the
POV-Ray for Windows v3.5\bin with all the previous files still there and
then run megapov.exe from there.

P.S.
Nevermind discussing rudeness, that's where most people get into trouble
anyhow. And... are we getting any closer to fixing the problem?
;-)

If you reread this thread carefully, you can see that you never actually
confirm that you have installed v3.5
Have you installed v3.5?

thank you bob, you're the only one here who has treated me courteously,
megapov version .7 seems to only work with pov version 3.1, contrary to
what others have said - i have deleted pov and have no intention of ever
using it again - if i am going to have to run the gauntlet every time i ask
a question i'm not interested

thanks anyway

I said: "(...) earlier versions of MegaPOV cooperate with POV-Ray 3.1" ?
Chris and Thorsten said that that MegaPOV 1.0 needs POV-Ray 3.5.
How is it in contrary to your statement ?

Well, the first reply you got already told you to use POV-Ray 3.5 and to
describe your problem more precisely if that does not help. You did state
your problem in another, longer post, but again made no mention of the
version of POV-Ray you tried to add MegaPOV to. So you got another reply
from someone else telling you that versions of MegaPOV older than 1.0 need
POV-Ray 3.1. Obviously 0.7 is an older version than 1.0. Yet, as reply you
really managed to post that you are still trying to use POV-Ray 3.6.

> contrary to
> what others have said

That is simply not true.

> - i have deleted pov and have no intention of ever
> using it again -

Sorry, but if you are unable to follow the most trivial instructions, you
should not be using POV-Ray. As you have demonstrated in all your posts you
do not want to read or follow instructions that would have helped you,
POV-Ray would have been useless for you. You could not have used POV-Ray
without reading the manual anyway!!!

Apart from that, as a new users maybe you should have tried to get started
with the official POV-Ray in the first place, rather than installing some
experimental patch version?

> if i am going to have to run the gauntlet every time i ask

Learn to read the answers you get before you complain! If you just ignore
them, then continue to do exactly the opposite of what you are told in no
uncertain terms, what do you expect? You can be happy people did not just
ignore you and your selfmade problem like you ignored their helpful replies
so many times!!!
