Pardon the posting, but I'm trying to get a news client working and I'm not
sure if news.povray.org is a NNTP-based client. Bear with me: either this will
work, or it won't. Either way, the annoyance factor should ultimately be
minimal.
Thanks for your forbearance.

news.povray.org is not a NNTP-based client.

Of course not, it's a server!

OK, it worked. If you're curious, I was testing slrn -- still can't seem to
get all the groups listed by using wildcards -- gotta' borrow the group names
from the netscape mail client and add them manually, but I'm happy to report
it DOES work!
Thanks for your patience

Slrn, you've made the best choice IMHO.

Hear, hear!

Incidentally, you're both using an old version of slrn. The new version
has some nice bugfixes.

You forgot to mention the evil bold type it uses for unread message
subjects, good job I kept a backup of the old version.

Mine uses a pleasing blue color. Perhaps you should check your .slrnrc.

(Actually, blue is what my ssh term uses to mean bold, so your mileage
obviously varies.) Try adding this to your .slrnrc:

set highlight_unread_subjects 0

From the manual:

 highlight_unread_subjects

   Type: integer
   Default: 1

If non-zero, the subjects of unread articles are highlighted. There
are two possible ways of doing this:

When set to one, unread subjects are printed bright (when using
colors) or bold (in monochrome mode). This will obviously not have any
visible effect if the subject is printed bold or in a bright color
anyways. Besides that, the special color ``default'' does not have a
   bright version.

When set to two, unread subjects are printed in the color you set with
unread_subject. In this case, only subjects of unread articles can be
   colored by score.
