...when I was looking for an idea for an animation, so here ya go:
The below link is to a flash video. The quality is _ok_ but not shattering.
You can download the full quality clip (12MB) using the link below this
one...
http://www.soware.co.uk/POVRay/player.php?filename=Gallery/Rain.flv
http://www.soware.co.uk/POVRay/Original/Rain.avi <-- The rain looks meuch
better on this one.
Ironically, I was searching the 'net for rain/thunder sounds while I had a
thunder storm going on outside but no decent quality microphone to record
it.
As always, please give me feedback and opinions - The more you suggest, the
better I can do next time

Oh and the tombstones do have "R.I.P." engraved on them but it's not
visible - I did start off by using media to make the lettering glow but it
looked awful - most likely as I'm currently incapable of making a glow
effect work properly :) any input on that would be appreciated too...

It looks good. It reminds me a lot of 80's adventure games, like Morteveille
Manor, and several Lucasarts games. Actually it reminds me of a specific
game the name of which escapes me. The lightning effect is very suggestive,
but I would give it a blue/white hue; there is much too much green IMO at
the moment when lightning strikes.

True. The lightning is mostly white so the green grass gives that effect - I
need to change that
The one it made me think of was Maniac Mansion by Sierra - Good ol' ScummVM
:)
Ideally, I'd like to make the curtains blow but I'm a little unsure how I
can pull that off - it's obv not a matter of rotation, I need them to
"billow" - I'll see what I can come up with :)
Thanks for the input!

I don't hear any sound in the video, so I'll assume that you didn't have
any luck.
You might try the Freesound project:
http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/index.php
All Creative Commons licensed sounds. It's a mixed bag, but sometimes
you'll find exactly what you need. :-)

You know you've been raytracing too long when you think it's a failing
of the universe that the large software companies like Corel or Fractal
Design do NOT export to POV primitives.

Thanks very much for that - I'll see what I canf ind. Unfortunately my Mic
is supposed to be noise cancelling and actualyl does it pretty well (I
believe it ahs 2 mic's and inverts the output from one before mixnig them -
thus embient should be cancelled out but directional should not)
The upshot fo all that is: VERY VERY QUIET rain... For the record, I also
decide that since a thunder roll was a few seconds long and the video is
abuot 12 secs, it might eb a bit too much. Ofc, sound would help the
realism...
That said, I've already found some useful stuff on that link - thank you.

When you try to record ambient sounds with a soise canselling mic, you can try
wraping your hands around it, leaving only the front showing. That way, your
hands will muffle the sound coming from the sides and the rear. If it work OK,
you can make a foam envelope or a casing with a directional opening.

Not really sure it works : a noise cancelling mike is usually a pair of
adjacent inverted phase cells, it takes close sources ( i.e. closer to the
'main' cell, so there is a difference) and cancels remote sources because
the sound tends to be equal on both cells.
I'm not sure either if you can muffle a thunder with your mere hands :-).
A simple solution is to purchase a simple microphone, there are a lot of
not expensive yet rather good electrets models.
I may have some thunders recorded somewhere. I'll have a look at my backups.

Unfortunately, I did not find them but I found some samples by google.
I fiddled a 12s loop that fits roughly with your avi file.
If I could decipher your mail adress I could send it to you :-)
