Of all that's been written on isosurfaces, is there some place that offers
tricks on speeding up, such as use of functions inside vs outside of
declaration, etc?

R. Suzuki has shown a few tricks to optimise functions for faster 
rendering involving the use of the f_ph, f_r and f_th functions.
Couldn't find the exact thread though.
