What exactly are NURBS? A question I always wanted to ask!

NURBS would be a primitive, not a physical object...I doubt there are
many objects POV could not render models of, as long as those models are
in a format it can use(triangles, isosurfaces, etc).

Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines.
They sort of do for 3d surfaces what Bezier Curves do for 2d lines. The
NURBS surface has a number of control points to which it is attracted,
and the control points can have different strengths (hence the "non-
uniform"). The higher the strength, the more the surface is attracted to
the control point and the more sharply it bends.
In a graphical modelling program, manipulating the control points can be
a bit like moulding modelling clay.

So what would be an example of a NURBS modeller (freeware so that I can
download it and try it now!)?

With NURBS modelling programs you get what you pay for but if my
info is correct MOPS might be good for getting a feeling for
NURBS modelling and it's free.

I heard that rhino is a good modeeler for NURBs is that correct. Is that
worth the pricetag though??

Many seem to think so. If I could afford it I would be tempted...

You can decide by yourself, as there is FREE trial version downloadable
(you can run it 20 times, after that it doesn't save, IIRC). Go to
http://www.rhino3d.com
But I would say, that it is well worth of price (especially if you are a
student).

Your are right in saying that POV can render anything.
It has more power then even ElectricImage, it's just that it can be REALLY
*REALLY* hard!
